spammers on site

Hello,

We have someone who keeps joining our site and leaving back links to their affiliate marketing sites. We delete their profile and ban them. But then they just come back with another email address and rejoin with a different username and keep on leaving back links to their sites. We already have it set so that only the United States can join the site and here he is every day again and again. We don't want to delete the United States or no one will be able to join. We have emailed him and told him that we will just keep deleting him every time and he just joins more and more. Right now we have removed our join page hoping he will see he can't join and after about 2 months maybe he just won't come back. It's just a shame we have to do that and then he might still come back in 2 months. Any other suggestions?

Perhaps ban the IP they have been joining from... but my guess is they're probably using proxies etc... so that might not work as well...

I split my join form into 2 pages, and added a "what's 5+5" field, and haven't had a spammer join since. Search, you'll find both solutions here.

That's because the majority of sites/companies that you pay per recaptcha (to bypass it) havent figured out how to add numbers up. Most of their efforts remains on more advanced forms of recaptcha with words and letters. It won't be long though..

I agree wit Ron , Once you add the 5+5=  along with the Captcha thats already installed it works like a charm ....I did it a little different on my site and have only had one since I made the change.

You don't even need the captcha. A properly worded human question will do more for your security than anything..Just make sure guests have absolutely no access to make changes or access sensitive information (like profiles)

I would read this post in it's entirety, then you can employ the methods that work best for you.

With tests on my new 7.1, I average 10 new spam members every hour without anything to block them. Captcha reduces that amount but only by about 80%. If I enable the human question, the only spam I receive is where a physical person takes the time to sit down and manually join my page. (very rare).
