phpBB3 integration from eSASe

This integration module allows you to easily integrate phpBB 3 forum into Dolphin7 instead of Orca.

The list of features:

1. Parallel authentication. (Dolphin -> phpBB or phpBB -> Dolphin)
2. If you remove member's profile from the Dolphin it will be automatically removed from phpBB too.
3. If you change any data in Dolphin (Username, Password, Email, Description) they will be automatically changed in phpBB forum.
4. The restored Dolphin password is transferring to the phpBB as well.
5. Exports registered Dolphin members into phpBB.
6. Stat menu will show the number of posts and topics in your phpBB3 forum
7. The new profile added via Dolphin Admin panel will be automatically created in phpBB3.
8. All member's friends existed in Dolphin are easily exported into phpBB forum and all the future friends will be transfered into phpBB too.
9. Forum RSS feeds
10. Dolphin profile's avatar will show in forum profile
11. All links profiles on the forum will lead to the profile in a Dolphin
12. A Dolphin template in the phpBB forum (in iframe)
13. Dolphin admins will be admins in forum as well

14 FINALLY!!! phpBB is now replace the Orca forum in Dolphin Groups as well!!!! It was requested so many times and I was working on this hardly. It is now provided and works as follows:

It is integrated but doesn't completely support Privacy due to Dolphin and phpBB differences. member and fans only are recognized as private forums and will be available for the group members only.. all other privacy settings are recognized as public.

NOTE: To have this updated package installed, you need to remove the previous phpBB ingtegration module.

Welcome to test it on demo site

(Orca content can be transferred into phpBB for some additional fee).

I have realized 2.0.3 version of integration. There was fixed bug with parallel authentication. Strongly recommended all customers make upgrade with this version.

PS. Just replace all files in modules/esase/forums! Without full installation

I have a few questions about this mod as well.

Is this only for PHPBB forums or can it work with SMF forums to?

Would I have to convert my SMF forum to PHPBB to make this mod work?

Will the integration of a PHPBB forum that already has several thousand members and 6 years of data, still be able to work with D7 as for the user names and passwords and their posts, messages, etc?

I've noted that my Firefox (latest version) still has trouble sizing the Iframe..  Is there a change I need to make to the module or to Firefox to get the window to expand completely?

I still have not been able to get it to work. When you log on to dolphin, does not log into phpbb. You have to log in separately. When you try to log in as an administrator, you have to be authenticated again, but it just goes in a loop trying to authorize you. I can't get into the backend.

We bought this plugin and also have trouble making it work. Seems like if we install new empty phpBB it works (at least sort of), but when trying to use existing forum it glitches badly. I try to get detailed description abt the problem from our technical person as we hope this would work out. Our phpBB forum is essential part of our site and we cannot do without.

OK, update.

phpBB-plugin works: when I re-registered my nickname in Dolphin I was able to go phpBB forum pages and I was readily logged in as old phpBB user. Also, if I logged in in the phpBB side, I could navigate to Dolphin pages and I stayed logged in. That is, authentication works between systems. Key is to re-register existing phpBB nick in Dolphin side.

There are serious problems though. Security. This plugin does not check password, it only checks that nick name exists in phpBB AND accepts new registration as old! That means that anybody can steal any old nick just by re-registering the nick. I just did steal a friend's nick at our testi site.

Even worse, the new fake nick user is accepted in phpBB as genuine, and I could access friend's posts and messages. Not good.

This security hole has to be corrected for this plugin to be useable. (This may not affect sites where there is no old forum but which starts fresh with empty forum.)

If there were a installing procedure which would import all whole old phpBB user database and activate it as Dolphin user database this would be no problem. It would also be smart and user friendly way to enter new site and user experience.

Another smaller security problem: If you check the profile of another user you can see his/her latest posts to forum. Problem is, you can see also the posts in secret and closed forum sections, which should be private. Not good. Only posts made to open forum sections should be freely readible.

That's all so far :-)

I hope these problems can be corrected, as the basic functionality of this plugin seems to be sound.

What's going on with this mod? Deleted it? too many security risks brought up. Is there going to be an update?

Was the log in / Dolphin registration security issue been corrected?  If so, when can we expect to see this mod available again?

Quote · 25 Jun 2011

Seems eSaSe has not yet corrected the script. Other than the stated security problems it was working fine, and if you start forum as new (without old user database) it probably would be secure enough. (Except for it publishing posts from secret areas, which would be no problem if all areas would be open to all users.)

This integration isn't even available in the market anymore.

So is there a working PHPBB 3 Dolphin 7 module / bridge available?
Quote · 2 Aug 2011

Esase removed his phpBB3/Dolphin integration from the market.

He sent me an email that he would release the module again possibly after Dolphin 8.  Frown

So is there a working PHPBB 3 Dolphin 7 module / bridge available?

D8 may be far away... it would be nice if he could fix it sooner, but I understand there may be a lot of patching to prevent mentioned security issues. As said, basic functionality was fine.

Meanwhile, these guys have also phpBB integration solutions:

No comments though how trouble free they are.
