oxwall vs dolphin

Is here somebody who actually tried oxwall and give out some review  comparion to dolphin 7 ?

Not used it, first impression of the demo and website is that it looks very clean and simple, but

modules such as events, links, groups seem to be larger versions of general comments type box. Nowhere near as much versatility as Dolphin from what I can see?

How old is OXwall? the plugins shop doesnt have very much in it.

Maybe it will grow and be really good, hope so as good competition produces innovation and development in Dolphin!

Would be interested in others views if they have properly used it, or other SN scripts...!

Looks really new. Not many modules at all for it as of yet. Looks pretty simple, but If I had to compare it to Dolphin, I would say there isnt any comparison.

Dolphin is much more versatile.

Nothing to see here

But oxwall is a great  and flexible software that even you can make your own plugin or can hire a programmer, i would say oxwall is the future...

I moved one of my dolphin sites to Oxwall at the request of the site admin, they thought Dolphin was to hard to navigate.

At first I liked the software but it is very limited.

this site of mine is running Oxwall now, http://www.takeoverjax.com/

as you can see the spammers are having a field day there; not a lot of options for keeping them out.

Right! I get frustrated at times with Dolphin; work my problems out here, and on my own now.

My main website http://molosserdogs.com is powered by dolphin. I have several hundred $$ wrapped up in modules and templates. The site runs fine but I have had many complaints that it is hard to navigate and find information despite my best efforts to simplify things.

I do run another site http://musthavepets.com using Oxwall. I find Oxwall to be easy to use and upgrade. It is feature rich out of the box and very intuitive to use.

It is new and fresh - so is worth a try for someone looking to start a blog, social net or community site. Did I mention that it is free?

It is not exactly new; it was one of the platforms that I installed and played with before I decided Dolphin was a better solution.  One big issue at the time was the photo module and the fact that to leave comments on a photo you had to open the image in the light box thingy and that was were the comments where shown; you can not see photo comments unless you clicked on the image and open it.  The last time I looked at Oxwall they had fixed the flash comment thing but it was still a bad photo module.

Another thing one must know is that you can not legally remove the Oxwall branding, there is no option to do so unless they changed that in the last months, half year, when I last looked at Oxwall; the Oxwall logo and link can not be removed.

Overall, after my appraisal of Oxwall, I think Dolphin is a better solution.

Oxwall branding can be removed after you pay for a contribution a min of $50,00 it was last year. Read the info on that remove branding on Oxwall site. Overall Oxwall is pretty good and i played around with it for a while.

modules are cheap but forum isn't that great. also the support is much less then it is here...

so if that is what you are going for then stick to dolphin.

if you want a LOW security site with not many options  -- then Oxwall is the one to rock & roll with.  Just remember the grass is always greener  .. till ya git thar!   It's basically a FB clone - at least that is what I make of it.

Just put one up to see after reading the gab... and I opine - it ain't nothing to write home about!

just as ya see it.  I will leave it up for a few days.... ( Modification of the theme was quite easy - bout 15 minute hack - other than... it sucks. )

I've been playing with Dolphin, Oxwall and Elgg for years and have two live sites, one with Elgg and one with Oxwall. The latest version of Oxwall is far better than the previous, but it still lacks a few features. Like Dolphin it was originally a dating script and I sometimes think the Oxwall Foundation is still funded by the Oxwall based dating script that's still marketed. The modules work on both.

It's absolutely nothing like Facebook but there's a large following who try to emulate Facebook just as there are here. It's so easy to use at the members end and it doesn't take long to figure out the admin. In a nutshell it's perfect for some sites but it doesn't have anywhere near the Admin hacking potential Dolphin does. You will quickly find some things lacking.

Actually the forum isn't bad. It's more active than Dolphin's, but both are very quiet. There's a guy there named Ross and he's Qxwall's version of AlexT. He answers most questions in a week or at least tells you where to look. Overall, I have about 95% of my questions answered within a week at Oxwall and about 50% here. Judging by my searches on both sites, there are more unanswered questions here by a long shot.

It's horses for courses. Oxwall is not as powerful, but not everyone needs a V8. And branding can be removed.

According to Oxwall's own words:

How to remove ‘powered by Oxwall’

This is the question we are being asked too often. If you are looking for a quick answer, here it is: Please don’t remove Oxwall reference from your site. We wouldn’t like you to do it even if you offer money.

As for questions, if you ask 'How do I ..." and it is followed by something that can be done in the interface, you will get an answer.  However, questions on how to hack the code may go unanswered.  Developers are busy and don't have a lot of time, especially now with trying to catch up with 7.2.x and now bam, a whole new point release; 7.2.1 to 7.3 skipping over a whole lot of other releases that probably should have been done.  So now scramble to finish 7.2 testing for modules and quickly get 7.3 testing done.

Crikey, that post is 5 years old!

Here's on that's only 3 years old. A lot can happen in two years:

Read the second listing: Oxwall Attribution Link.

If you're referring to my request for help to put Profile questions and answers on one line, your response is way off the ball. This forum is full of hack requests and many are answered. I've picked up on a few and they work great.

Many are also picked up by the developers and added to the script. I believe my profile questions/answers should be one. The current display is very unprofessional.

This is how Oxwall does it. Note the Tabs:

The word is: Elegant!

By comparison, Dolphin reminds me of a Mac Truck on steroids.

Not really, people here just don't use the "search" feature enough.

I rarely use the search "feature". I use Google instead and usually get what I'm looking for. Over half the questions I open have never been answered. I agree that some questions are answered elsewhere, but the original topic header is often ambiguous.

What Boonex has to understand is that their forum is a huge marketing tool. If people ask a question, regardless of how silly it is and it's not answered, they give up. I've said it before on this forum, Boonex should take a long hard look at WYSIWYGWebuilder.com. Their forum is amazing. Every question is answered by the WebBuilder team. They get hundreds of posts a day and 90% of the questions are answered in 24 hours. If a question has been answered before, the writer is directed to that question.

Oxwall is now much the same, but Ross, the Forum moderator is sometimes slow in responding.

In terms of appearance, Dolphin is nowhere in the competition!

All others have so many nice themes available, Dolphin doesn't have even a single one!

You may have misunderstood me; you are free to ask questions on code hacks and many have been asked and many have been answered.  What I was trying to emphasis is that at this time developers are rather busy and don't have time to answer such questions.  When the current releases slow down a bit and people catch up such questions may receive more answers more quickly.

I have more than just text in comments on my site.  Allowing such is easy; just understanding more about TinyMCE which is available at tinymce.com
