new dolphin 7.0

When this new software update comes out, will it integrate automatically into our current software (like an update) or is this something that will have to be done manualy for my site??

And.. does the lifetime license cover this or will this be additional cost to me?

Quote · 25 Nov 2008
of course the new dolphin version will include the automatic updater for the old dolphin version. And you not to need cost new license!!
We only have a unique modules for dolphin!

Does it mean the update will install successfully even if I have quite a few mods on my site? :-)

Quote · 26 Nov 2008

yes, much money was spent time and integration problems..... what happens to mods???

Quote · 26 Nov 2008

Mydatery - what is with the "Remember Folks.. don't complain" admonition - probably at least half the posts here are complaining about something, and the ones in this thread are mild compared to many others.

-

Anyway, that is not why I am posting.  I would like to know the best process for upgrading a site that has fairly heavy mods.   I do understand that in many cases an upgrade can do "more damage than good" but I would like to keep up with the latest version of Dolphin and want to be as proactive as I can in planning for this upgrade.

-

I've put my site in a subdirectory called /members.  It seems to me that a good approach would be to install a fresh copy of Dolphin in a different directory - let's call it: /test.   Once I got /test working, how would I move it to /members.  Could it run off the same database?  Should the directory change be done with the .htaccess file.

-

Before that though, what is the best way to incorporate the mods?  I've never done an upgrade like this, but I understand there are "diff" tools where you look at each file - plus they publish a diff list with the upgrade package, don' they?  Does anyone know of any tools to make this process easier?    I don't have a huge number of users, but would like to say operational the whole time.  Any thoughts or techniques for managing a Dolphin upgrade on a site with mods would be appreciated.

Good information Kosmic - and I don't think it is off topic - thanks for posting.  I would also be interested in how others here set up their testing site for new versions, and how they do the transfer once it is ready.

p.s.  by the way- has anyone seen version 7 yet?

Quote · 29 Nov 2008

Good advice Mydatery,  I still don't quite understand how to do the database switchover, but I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it.  Has anyone seen 7.0 yet?  I think it has been a few weeks now since the announcement.  Is there a demo site anywhere we can look at?

Rob

p.s.  I am especially interested in seeing the new menu system.  I really hate Dolphins existing menu system.

Just try to understand. How uprgade file can able to keep your changes in files? How it can be possible?

If we change 50-80% of sources of any file. And was added many new files and deleted old.

You still think that it possible? :)

Of course no, more - will need to update modifications that they works at new dolphin version.

More, .. several types of modifications was realized in this new version. So you will need to recheck - are you need some of your old modifications or not ..

I think most people understand that Andrey - I was mostly looking for "best practices" on the upgrade because it will be a fairly big job.   Any estimated time of arrival on the new version yet?   Is there anything we can at least peek at?

I have decided to put everything on hold until after 7 is released. But then I have not launched I just hate wasting the time and I am worried that that 7 wont be released anytime soon.

We wall know these things work. Even at the best of times trying to meet deadlines are almost impossible, we are in the middle of silly season with Christmas and New Years I really doubt it will be ready anytime soon but hope I am wrong

Quote · 12 Dec 2008

Well when they annouced Dolphin 7 they said it would be "a couple of weeks" - but that was three weeks ago.  They have since updated that post and now say that the "Beta stage is close".  Let's hope so- if we have a big upgrade to do this is a good time of year to do it.

There is a ton support from users in the forum sections and http://www.expertzzz.com.

Both sites have job sections where you request a specific job to be done and your budget. But for free advise search the forums with your specific question or post a new link with your questions if you dont find your anwers. I am not a progamer as well and have recieved a tonn of help from users here they are very helpful.

Does anyone have an ETA on this yet?  It has been well over "a couple of weeks" now.  Hopes that we might be able to work on our upgrades over the holidays are fading.

Quote · 23 Dec 2008

So does anyone Really know when version 7 will be released!!

Quote · 26 Dec 2008

We are working hard. Very many new changes and not so many time. Just try to understand that here will more changes than between 6.0 and 6.1, even more than from 5.6 to 6.1 :)

Many changes in pricing policy and licensing.
This is will really great product (as always)

I contacted presales about having access to source code so I can do major modifications.  Here is part of the answer I received two days ago:

"the code is available for the Dolphin and Orca portions of the current scripts. Ray is proprietary and we don't release code for that. We are working on the version 7 of our software and getting ready for an Alpha release with beta soon to follow. This version will have Ray source code available and then all scripts will allow viewing and using the code."

I was about to take the jump and rebuild my site in a highly modified version of Boonex/Dolphin   Then I found out that Dolphin 7 is coming out.

Now I am stuck in limbo, should I move forward on rebuilding my site in the current version and spending $1,000s on modifications or should I wait and hope for a timely release of Dolphin 7?

Quote · 26 Dec 2008

Hi! I think that you should wait for Dolphin 7.0. It wil save you a lot of headaches if you will work on top of a new version.

Thanks!

Yes, presales are right, dolphin will 100% opensource. So about modded sites .. very many features and ideas was realized in dolphin7.

Thats excelent news

But no one answeres the real question.

What is the timeline for Dolphin7? How many days weeks or months?

I want to buy the licence, but I'm on old since November because of the news of Dolphin7

I think everybody needs a small timeline just simple tell us:

"It will take at least more one month"

or

"The beta will start next week if things go OK, and we will release the final in one month it everything goes OK"

Simple, and everybody will be happy, like me.

I have to organize to be prepared for Dolphin7 or if will take more time than the normal I will go to Dolphin 6.1.4 to start with something.

Continue the good work boonex

Quote · 27 Dec 2008

So can we at least get a hint?  The earlier post that it would be "a couple of weeks" was made in November, and I was hopeful to be able to work on my upgrade over the holidays, as I am sure others were.  Business decisions are now on hold because of this lack of information- especially decisions about critical mods I need to make, which will be a waste of time and money if they are not needed or don't work in the new version.  Could I also request that Boonex communicate with this community and give us better information on release dates for this version, so that we will be able to better plan our work.

Thank you

I've tried emailing anyone and everyone at Boonex since 12/20/08 to find

out an ETA on Dolphoin 7.  I guess they don't want to disappoint people if there

is a hang up in the process.  "Silence cannot be misquoted," someone said.

However, a PROJECTED TIMELINE would be helpful.  PLEASE!

If I don't get some type of response from someone at Boonex, I will probably have to go elsewhere.  Time is money.

Dolphin must have support for the admin panel to enable security verification code, create groups and other such valuable options so that admin can manage and add features to the site.

Starlight.  They just posted an estimate on their blog that it will be anywhere from "two weeks to two months" - however, Boonex has a history of slipping schedules  - as I mentioned, the November announcement said "a couple of weeks" and even well before that there were several hints that it would be "soon" - whatever that means.   They said on this post http://www.boonex.com/unity/blog/entry/It_s_close_but_ that everytime they get close they "have to order a new round of changes".  I expressed concern that this is beginning to take on the attributes of what is called "a runaway project" - like what happened with Microsoft Vista.  I hope not, but we don't really know whether in six weeks or so  they will be saying the same thing - i.e. that it will be "soon" - or just "a few more weeks".  Of greater concern was a detail hidden in that post - that they still aren't even sure that OpenID will be part of the new version.  That is a pretty big thing not to know at this stage of the game!   The short answer - I still don't think we really know.

Well, another two weeks has come and gone with no news, as it has been happening at least since November.   This is frustrating because no one wants to install and modify a software that is at the end of its lifecycle, and I am seeing potential competitors make rapid progress with other technologies.   I'm now trying to figure out a technical strategy for moving forward but I have very little informaton- if Boonex is still not able to give any kind of credible ETA could I ask that they at least tell us about database compatibility?  I have another custom php/mySQL program that I want to integrate with my Dolphin application.  If I get this program working with the existing Dolphin, will it likely still work after the upgrade?  Will that database field names be the same, for example?  Any information at all would help guys - this is killing us.

Aloha, I'm working with a group that wants to put up a social networking site ASAP. We think the feature set of Dolphin 7.0 makes the decision to bypass Elgg.com easy. But, PreSales only responded about sales, and not about using new code or compatability with new version. Do anyone have recommendations based on using existing code and working with the Boonex community? Thanks, Doc Yogi
Quote · 23 Jan 2009

Doc, I don't completely understand your question, but Boonex has said they will have an upgrade script for the new version so I don't think you have to worry too much about getting started.  The problem for most of us is that we have modified the program, and still have no clue as to when the new version will be released, so can't do any planning of the work we will need to do to make the modifications work with the new version.  I'm sure it would still be nice for you to know - if it is in a week then I would just wait, but since they won't tell us I would go ahead and install the current version and become familiar with its operation, but not do any major modifications.

Thank You, Rob,

We now have made the decision to go with Dolphin. I became a contributor, so we are now uploading the software to our server to begin to play with it. We will try to only make CSS modifications now so that we can be flexible when 7.0 comes out. If you have any other suggestions for technically competent LAMP programmers on how to work with Dolphin and Boonex products, we would always welcome it. Thanks, again!

Has anyone heard any rumors yet?  I read back on the Boonex blog and they have been using words like "soon" or "close" or "just a few more weeks" since at least last August, and 2008 was supposed to be the year they rolled out "the next big thing".   This is like being tortured - I have no credibilty at all left with my business partners as I believed these posts and conveyed this incorrect information.   May I respectfully request that Boonex tell us what is going on - has the project failed?  Do you have any idea when the software will actually be released?  Short of this can we ask questions about the new software so we can do a minimal amout of planning?  My question is this - will the software be designed as a more "general purpose" social networking site, as opposed to just a dating site?  In other words, will we still have to go through all of those modification steps to remove "age and sex" or will that be an option with this version.  I have many other questions as well, but that is my first one.
