large images on front page stutter and fart...

I've changed the default images on my front page (yep - I'm a serious hacker & coder - well, ok, I'm not...) and when I load the page the images sort of flash randomly (sometimes portions of an image, as the size is often extremely large) and - for a few moments - it's just kind of a mess.  It's a lot like me in the morning.  In other words it seem disoriented when it's first disturbed and, then - after a shot of coffee, so to speak - it eventually becomes presentable.  I'm assuming that this is some sort of Java (no "coffee pun" intended) code which probably resizes the images; nonetheless,  to be on the safe side, the images which I've uploaded have precisely the same dimensions as the default images.  Ergo, my question: what's up with the goofed up images? Is there a fix? Did I do something wrong?

All the images should be the standard size of 960px × 270px  .....

Resize them and you shouldn't have a probem.
