Basically I am trying make a new page and I am successful. Now I want top set this page as homepage. But I am unable to set my new page as home page.

not possible. the index.php is what you are referring to, and by default the script serves the index.php as the homepage, unless you are using an index.html, html is served first, so you would have to call up the .php file from a hyperlink. so basically what you would do is edit the the index.php file from your editor from admin. and all the blocks that are there, you would set to inactive, and place the blocks created by you to that page. this is the only way i know you are going to get away with what you are asking here. hope this helps.
