how to keep other websites from linking to my webs

Hello,

I'm not sure if I am posting in the correct area, but here goes.

I have notice for month and a half the my stats have dropped like t was the first year it was up and running.

I am not please with the answers that my hosting provider has giving me so,

I been doing some checking around and have notice some porn and other sites have been linking to my site.

For the last few years my website has really taken off and the sats have been great as far as I am concern. But

now they are hardly moving up. Could the cause be from the other sites causing my site to fail?

My hosting provider tells me that this is normal. Is that a true statement?

I'm still on 7.08 release. I am waiting on getting everything updated in the near future.

Any help and advise would be great.

Thanks,

Yes. It is. If you have content on your site that interests other sites, they may add a link to it. The thing is, there is nothing you can do to prevent sites from linking to you. All you can do is contact them and ask them to remove the link.

Deano, what about hotlinking to files on a Dolphin site; does Dolphin have anything to help prevent hotlinking?  For those that might not know hotlinking, it is where they will include material from your site, such as images, on their site.  What this means is that every time the image (or other content) is viewed on their site, it is using bandwidth from your server since the image or video is being served up from your server. .

Hot linking can be stopped. It's done by adding some lines to the .htaccess file.

He was referring to his stats, so i was thinking backlinks which can seriously affect search engine rankings. Good if the rank of the site linking to you is also good, but bad if the rank is poor.

Hot linking hot so much so, but yea, as you said, it can rob bandwidth.

Once in a while it pays to study your server access logs, and see if there are any domains that frequently hot link images on your site.

Many years ago, when ebay charged a fee for every auction image hosted on their site, people looked for ways to host images for free.  I operated a vBulletin site with a photo gallery add-on, and discovered that a particular user was using my site to host images for his ebay auctions.  He had dozens of auctions with all the images hosted on my site.  All those image views on ebay was using a significant amount of BW.  My solution was to add a hot  link redirect for images referred to by ebay.com, where all the guys ebay auction images were replaced with an image of my choosing.  This is similar to the image I used:

His dozens of existing ebay auctions that now used this  image, stayed that way for about a week before his discovered that all his auction photos were this image.  He stopped using my site to host images.

Reminds me of the story some 10+ years ago when someone was reselling our software on eBay using our images hotlinked from our site. We swapped one pic to a massive ultra-hardcore gangbang porn image and their account was gone for good.

Hi all,

I'm not sure what it's call, but what I am reading from all of you is , it may just be hot linking to my site. I am in my cPanel and under Links from an external page (other web sites except search engines)this site is linking to my site, http://www.letrasbrasileiras.com.br/downlods/young-eventing-teens-licking-older-mature-women/

When I clicked on it, the site has my background but images are not mine.

How do I get ride of this S.O.B.?

I'm thinking this is why my sites stats have falling so dramatically

Sorry about the bold type, for some reason, can't change it.

For sites that are stealing your images which is hotlinking your can block it. I provided a link to a page that shows you how to do it. Here it is again. http://altlab.com/htaccess_tutorial.html

One thing to remember, is that if you use a hot link redirect for images on your domain, host the image that you are redirecting TO, on a different domain, else you may create an endless loop.

I don't know why someone would use your 2px x 10px repeating background image. It doesn't make sense.

In this particular case, I would suggest creating a hotlink redirect that replaces the small 2 x 10 image with an image on another site that is at least 1MB in size... the larger the better.  Perhaps an image from some government site in Brazil, or one from some nasty porn site.  Since the image repeats, it will make whatever page he's using it on, load very slowly, and it will get him some undesired attention.

If it's a GIF image then consider replacing it with an animated GIF that flashes some very very very annoying colours ;-)

Thank you everyone for your help. I contacted my hosting provider and they told me where to go in order to stop hot linking. They provide an area for me to enable it, so I will see how that works. You guys are the best! Thanks again for your help!
