This mod will probably help you more than anything else:
http://www.boonex.com/unity/extensions/entry/Join_by_country
I don't use this mod, but I did develop my own solution that I use on my site. I only allow joining from US based IP addresses, and I also block registrations through US based open and anonymous proxy servers. The mod by ESASE will allow you to block registrations from those countries like China, whose only interest in your site, is a place to post spam.

HL, my question is. Does it automatically know the person is in that band country if not can't the person just lie and say there from a different country. Just curious

I too banned China and have not had a spammer since. It's a nice feeling when you go to your site and see NO spammers.. You possess an intuitive intelligence so powerful it can help you heal, and relieve stress. |

It has nothing to do with the country field. The mod matches the users IP address from which they are accessing the join form, with a lookup table in the database containing IP address ranges of every country on the planet. If the IP address belongs to a banned country, the user is not permitted to join.

i dont get any spammers as long as you dont have blogs available for the standard level or events for auto approve. anything else that can be auto put on like that, disable and then they won't come to your site. it's part of the parameters they search for on dolphin powered sites. i tested it the other day, turned on events to auto approve and got 4 chinese spam bots sign up in a matter of 15 minutes. turned it back off and now none.
Just my 2 cents

It's pretty easy with a simple Google search like This One, which will return links to just about every Dolphin 7 site in existence. It's not just Dolphin. You can construct a Google search to find any type of site you want.
One thing I know for certain, is that these spammers mine boonex.com forum posts and blog posts, for links. Every time I have posted a link to my site to demo something, I would get a flurry of spammer registrations within 24 hours. It would happen every single time, so I know it wasn't just coincidence. That's why I've blocked everyone but US based registrants. My site will have a local focus, and I have no use for out of country members.... hell, I don't really need members that live North of Dallas

How do you ban a country? I would like to block china as well.

hahahahahahaha.......:)
If you were in LA now I would buy you a cup of coffee and we could chit chat about the spammers.....BUT! I just had a chat with my hosting company and they will block all of great China from entering my site when I move to a dedicated server which I intend to do anyways soon.
Anything else I need to know about spammers?

Great topic!
Dolphin has broken me in to the wonderful world of creating and owning something that I hold quite dear to my heart my little site.
I spent days/weeks and months of moving pixel by pixel images and text etc to finally come up with something that I am happy to own.
I get no visitors lol who cares the sites mine all mine hahaha now the search engines seem to have found it and I managed to get a person who actually tried joining my site! I nearly fell off my chair with excitement! I must explain that the site is admin approved.
I notice that the poor fellow tried to join my site 2 days earlier - Now here I am about to apologize for the delay in approving him when I notice his email address: 823871834@qq.com and Im thinking OK wtf is qq.com? I will do some research when I look at his username xll1212 so I type it all into google and my fears are confirmed! A forum site about spammers has this person listed. My thanks go out to that site.
Since then 4 more spammers from China have attempted to get in (thank god I didn't have it set to auto approve)! (All this has happened in the last 5 days)
Something else to note is the first spammer actually bothered to try to access my site by clicking the join link in the email my site had sent to him - Up to now none of the other spammers have bothered - Something weird is going on.
Why can't these guy's do what we are doing and make there own sites? Im sure they must have enough talent for this?
My main point I would like to know how they are doing this though:
My site has a hit and flag counter courtesy of flagcounter.com and my little site has only had 10 hits in 3 months BUT they are all visitors from the UK - Not a problem but if these guys are from China how are they even attempting to gain access to my site?
They are not registering as even landing on my homepage? My login and join box are situated on the homepage along with the hit counter!
It doesnt make a whole lotta sense to me?
I havent banned my 5 members (Im not gonna approve them either) Im just gonna let em keep growing and see if any more patterns emerge here!.
Do you think there is some sort of auto joiner these spammers have created that just try and fill fields out for Dolphin just to try and find some free advertising?
Either way im not too happy about it.
Its an Asian invasion.

Thanks bluemax for your reply - If it gets much worse I will definitely go down that route, as for now though things have settled down again. Maybe they have realized not to bother with my little site as they cannot auto get in.
A small update is Im now up to 8 members and 6 of them are the spammers sat in my pending tray and long may they rot lol 2 of them have now clicked the confirmation email.
They are getting sneakier the last tried to trick me by using a gmail account instead of the usual 325243mofo@yahoo.cn and then listed there profile as fashion pandora pandora jewelry pandora uk pandora bracelet. tsk

My opinion is that they know about the Boonex site and most members of this site post their website links in their account info. The spammers search this site for all of the links to the social networks and they find us. |
