are we safe with vendors

can boonex force vendors into updating the modules after every release of dolphin.i want to know or its up to the vendor.i wouldnt see the need to buy modules when it can become a problem in the future

No they can not. It is up to the developer to decide.
Your best bet is ask before you buy ;)

I would not buy any modules if I were you. If you head towards that path then you are in the danger of "Gambling". Basically even if something fails what you paid for you will want to buy something else to fix or enhance because you dont want to give up on your investment. Some people invested hundreds and hundreds of dollars in dolphin and it is really too late for them to leave now, ending up with a practically a not-working and non-active community site in endless beta.

So I highly discourage you the purchasing of any modules, 15 dollars there might be cheap but you will end up purchasing cheap modules frequently which does some up to a very large amount of money. Dolphin itself might be not expensive, true, but it was never the developers intent to make most of the money off the software but from "Unity".

Better do what I do, learn some basic html and do as much as you can on your own and then just release your community or you will end up becoming a boonexian 24 / week.

And no, buying modules is not safe either since they can conflict with your core modules and the overall security and integrity of your site. You also dont know what other code is in there and to be honest, the developer may very well stop updating or be away for a year or permanently, or might not have a clue of how to fix an error, leaving you with no choice other than to buy a nother module to fill in the missing piece and so on succesively.

@Rolf_V - Nice of you to insult every single developer here regardless of their reputation.

@frandora - Do some research on the developer before you buy. There are plenty of good developers here.

Boonex can't enforce developers to maintain mods through different script versions.

There are some very trusted developers though who go out of their way to help.

Have a look at market place under 7.1 listings, or latest updates to see which mods are being updated.

I know a few developers are holding off until 7.1 final release, but many have already released updates.

Ignore any advice that says not to buy mods! Thats just plain stupid advice really.

I've build many dolphin sites, and have used certain mods to completely adjust the script to perform in different ways.

Would make a list of my personal trusted developers, but don't want to do injustice to others that I have not used. Unity is a safe place though in general!

If in doubt, just buy mods that are listed under 7.1 ready! no gambling there!

I'll be quick.

  1. There is a difference between modules and mods.  In short, modules != mods.  Modules are self-contained and can be installed from the admin panel.  The only time I've seen a module cause conflicts is when the developer chose the same permalinks as a default module.  Mods alter core files, and can sometimes conflict with other mods or new versions.  Simply keep track of chose changes and you should be fine.
  2. Developers have to support their stuff.  If your version of Dolphin is listed as compatible, they have to support it.  If something's wrong with a module/mod, the developer has to take a look.  If it's because of their module/mod and not some other mod/an unsupported version of Dolphin, they have to fix it.  If they don't, they have to issue a refund.
  3. Keep third-party modules and mods in mind when upgrading to a new version.  Check with the developer first to make sure their stuff still works.  If they're working on a supported version, wait until they're done.  For mods, always make sure modified files aren't overwritten by the patch.  Most of the time, both modules and mods work with a new version.
  4. Hello.  I'm a moderator (Bosun?).  If a developer isn't playing by the rules, report them to someone like me.  We'll try to take care of it.

This post has been brought to you by the letter "E".  What words start with "E"?  Let's see!  Edible.  Edge.  Everyone.  Engelbert Humperdinck.

I have had very good results with buying modules and mods.  I had one where the developer was a bit slow on fixing a problem with a product but in the end it was fixed.  Most products will require (in my experience) modification to core files.  This is because of the architect of Dolphin; and due to the complexity of Dolphin.  Some vendors will offer free installation and some will offer a fee base installation.  You can always email the vendors and ask them questions before you buy.  If the module/mod does not state it is compatible with your version of Dolphin then wait before buying to see if it will be upgraded to your version.  Sometimes modules/mods can not be upgraded due to changes in the core files of Dolphin during an upgrade.  Communication with vendors is key, if you email a vendor and they don't respond, then don't buy because they may no longer be active in Dolphin for whatever reason.  I have had that to happen when asking about a product; my question has yet to be answered so I am not going to purchase the product.  Just today I enquired about a product to make sure I could use it with Nginx; if you are not sure about a product, ask the vendor before buying.

As for upgrades, many vendors state that once you buy a module/mod you get free upgrades; if upgrading is possible which is not always the case because vendors don't control what code changes will happen with Dolphin.
