Your Opinion & Advice needed

Hello to everybody. Thanks for taking time to view this topic.

Let me start with the beginning. I have Dolphin 6.4 everything worked smoothly until 2 weeks ago when i started to get errors such as "MySQL Server has gone away" or "Cannot connect to database". Now, i was asking my hoster what's going on and this was their answer:

"I conducted a thorough investigation of your particular problem and found out that the "MySQL server has gone away" message is caused by the fact that the queries which your website is trying to execute towards its database exceed the timeout settings of the MySQL server.

The value of the wait_timeout variable in the global MySQL settings has been recently equalized on all our shared hosting servers. The current value is 10. This change has been performed by our System Administrators as part of configuring the shared servers based on their best knowledge for optimal server performance. The settings cannot be altered on per account basis and increasing them further in the global MySQL configuration might lead to a serious disruption in the provided service, if not downtime, which will affect all the customers whose accounts reside on the the same server.

As a possible course of action I recommend you to contact a developer which is familiar with the source code of your application and the structure of its database and possesses the required programing skills to assist you in optimizing the database."

Now the question is: What shall i do? As a shared hosting it had everything ok until this came up. Is it any other way to fix this issue instead of switching to a VPS?
