Today I bought a new laptop , not knowing what a POS Windows 8 was. I got the laptop home, and used it for about 10 minutes, and that was all I could take, so back it went. The retailer lost a $2300 sale because of Win 8. The os might be OK for smaller touch screens, but for anything with a keyboard and mouse, Windows 8 takes the term 'sucks' to a whole new level. so much to do.... |
On a touchscreen PC with a virtual keyboard, it will probably be OK. For everything else, the UI is just plain clumsy, awkward, erratic, and just plain ugly.... to name a few. If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, Microsoft paved a pretty good stretch with Windows 8. I'd rather run DESQview on an Intel 8088 machine. RE; Hint: do not use Microsoft systems ... That would be fine, except all the Windows software I own runs best under Microsoft Windows. I'm sure all the little weenie gamers will like Win 8..... however, all the business users that work for a living, will need something better suited for all those things that grown-ups do with computers. This list is dead on for me too. I'll skip 8 just like I skipped Vista. Why does MS insist on getting us used to key features for 3 or 4 versions and then yanking them away from us? It's almost like every other version is designed by a group of people who never used any of the previous versions.... and in some cases a computer at all.

I have been using Win8 for a while now, I quite like it. When your using the desktop (as opposed to the Metro interface) it is just the same as Win7. It feels even more stable than Win7 did. My 2 cents. Stuart There are none so blind as those that will not see. |

Ewww understood (ish)! Dont like Apple, like their products. Msoft - the other way round these days! |
I dont like Apple so much as a company but Macs are great... Cant go back to Windows after Mac I have a mac mini and a notebook with ubuntu and a windows partition. I use the mac mini and the ubuntu partition. RARELY do I go into the windows partition. Most of the apps I need I have the ubuntu equivalent. Also, I use wine and have a couple of windows applications I run in ubuntu. But, to each their own. Some people HAVE to have windows, that's just the way it is. When I get my office setup, my graphics person is gonna be in heaven with that new 24" iMac. They are SO sexy! http://www.mytikibar.com |

I saw Windows 8 in real time on 06-12-2012. It would make sense for a tablet not for a desktop. Even if one has a touch screen, reaching over to move things around would soon have you with neck and shoulder problems. Unless one can completely replace the metro interface like you can in past Windows OSes, you are stuck with an interface that gets in the way. Constantly having to go to a corner to get access sucks. There is a reason, Microsoft, that Apple has a desktop OS and a table OS; different hardware, different interfaces; the right tool for the right job. Personally, I am no fan of Microsoft; and for the record they brought most of their applications. However, there are programmes I use that are not very stable running under WINE. There is an open source clone of Windows in the works but the development is very slow and even years later they are still in Alpha; they lack the coders necessary to bang the thing out. By clone I mean just that, they are working to recreate all the windows APIs; not a small undertaking for a small group of coders. Geeks, making the world a better place |

I had to post in defense of Windows 8. I have been a avid user of iPhone and iPad since the day it was released. I was very skeptical of Windows 8 when it was introduced. I was had been a Windows user all my life. So, with that said I was highly considering moving to Mac, but decided against it when Windows 8 was announced. Only because I wanted to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt. I'm glad I did. I have since replaced my iPad with the Surface Pro and my iPhone with Nokia Lumina 928 (Windows 8 OS). As a business owner and Web Developer - Windows 8 phone and devices are much more useful and I have been more productive. Yes, Windows 8 does have a small learning curve. Remember, iPhone is was considered an idiot device by many because is was ease to learn and use. I truly believe this is Microsoft opportunity for a comeback. Use more people replace their Windows 7 PCs and laptop the Windows 8 OS will become very popular and will have a huge install base. It's OK to state your preferences, but as technology advocates we should not be so quick to place a negative views on new technology or new versions of existing tech.

Well, that's real nice son, but us grown ups that work for a living use desktops, office apps, and graphics/CAD programs that need a real computer....not some POS tablet. If you like to hang out in Starbucks with a tablet, then W8 is probably for you. For any serious, real world business application, W8 is a POS of the first order. HAHAHHAHAHAHHAA!! spot on! I set here hours a day with my old but "loved" laptop. It has had its bad days, taken a fall or two, and one time last year the back light went out so I replaced it with one too dim that I had laying around but it gets the job done. It runs Ubuntu just fine and 70 percent of my online time is done on it. But when it comes time to get some work done I have to head over to the desktop that runs Win7. All the programs I use to do my radio show are Windows programs, 99 percent of the time if you have to run a 3rd party software package to do something, you can bet it will run native one windows. Sorry but it is the world we live in. I went to buy a new laptop twice already, found the ones with the hardware I wanted, but was forced to say "no thanks" due to them all coming with Windows 8. Windows is never a "must" on my laptops and granted soon as I got it home it would duel boot to Ubuntu but if I am going to buy one that will fix the problems of the one I'm using now then it will have to run Windows, and a version that don't turn my freaking laptop into a oversized smart phone with a quarter of the battery life.. any Ideas when Windows 9 is set to release? Tablets are OK for what they are designed to do. I get a little annoyed at the adverts saying the desktop is dead. By the way, HP just released a new desktop. I could not see writing a novel on a tablet even if a keyboard is attached to the thing. I most definitely could not see doing any sort of serious programming or web development, or drafting, graphic work, 3D graphic work, etc. on anything but a desktop. Laptops are nice for what they are designed for, a portable computer but laptops also are lacking since they have limitations on graphics and processing even though they have made advances in both. The new 1.5 TB and 2 TB SSD drives will allow some decent storage in portable devices. When it comes to desktop computers and servers, I always build my own. You have complete control over the components and you have complete control over the OS you put on the machine. Furthermore, you can get more for your money because all your money goes into the parts, unlike buying from Dell or HP or even Lenovo. Geeks, making the world a better place |

I hear that 8.1 will be release by August 1; or has that changed since I last heard? Geeks, making the world a better place |

Really, Houstonly, it seems you're the one that needs to grow up! You have no idea who I am or want I do. I have currently have a Surface Pro. I use it to develop my clients websites using applications such as Dreamweaver CC, Photoshop CC, Fireworks CC, and the entire MS Office Suite. I have a Windows Phone which I use to make quick notes and take pics of client retail location that syncs to my Surface Pro. I can easily migrate these notes and photos to my web development apps typically within a few minutes. I'm here not to criticize another platform but to ask Boonex to consider expanding it's reach by supporting a growing platform (Windows 8). We should all have a common goal to expand the reach of Boonex, so we all can grow our local marketshare using the Dolphin platform.

I ust started using 8.1 Preview, and although it takes some getting used to the new Metro style, my pc actually runs a lot more stable than when I had win 7 on it. But, I really would like the old-school start button in the bottom left corner. Its taking a while to get used to not having it there anymore. caredesign.net |
I thought 8.1 returned the button. Maybe it is a setting; off by default. Geeks, making the world a better place |
The removal of the Windows 8 Start button last year turned out to be a hot-button issue for users of Microsoft's latest operating system. Following a range of feedback from customers, Microsoft is now preparing to release Windows 8.1 on October 18th with a Start button. The latest OS update also includes optional changes to boot to desktop and disable hot corners, but the Start button is a permanent addition that users can not switch off.
Microsoft is choosing to highlight the button return in a new Windows 8.1 ad. After launching a "Windows Everywhere" campaign back in June, the latest Windows 8.1 ad follows a similar pattern. It highlights the ability to start up to the desktop (boot to desktop) and "hit the start button to flip back and forth" between the desktop and "Metro" Start Screen Geeks, making the world a better place |
if I read that correctly, the start button switches between the Desktop view and the Metro view - which is what I have now, I want the old start button where it opens up a panel like in previous versions (with all programs, control panel and all that good stuff)- not switching back and forth between desktop and metro. caredesign.net |
Yes, the start menu. Mmmm; Geeks, making the world a better place |

My best friend recently bought a windows 8 laptop from dell and the screen would always turn white and blank so you can't use it. I tried to upgrade my windows 7 computer to windows 8 for my protools HDX system and it sucked so bad that I downgraded back to windows 7. Even Cramer on Mad Money was downgrading windows 8. It has too many flaws. To me it's like another windows vista. It just sucks. My parents also bought windows 8 and took it back within two weeks! They never take anything back. Plus, all of the good torrent plugins and apps are still in windows 7. Not that I'm doing anything illegal or anything. HeHe. |
I bought Start8 and ModernMix. Problem solved.*

I tend to not add a bunch of things as I am using a preview version for testing purposes, so want to see how it runs "as is". I first was leary about going to 8.1, but I gotta say. I am starting to like it. I was opposed to Vista for a long time, till I actually started using it. I gotta admit, I like 8.1. A lot of people I know don't like it, but it - in my opinion - it isn't that bad. Other than the noted loss of start menu from previous versions, but I can get used to not having it. caredesign.net |
Microsoft folly is they only wanted to have one OS to write and maintain. The desktop is a different world than the tablet and the two devices are used differently. I don't want to lean over my desk and swipe at things. A desktop monitor sits further away. If we are writing our novel we are not doing it on a tablet. The right tool for the right job; yes Microsoft, I can use a rock for a hammer but it makes a lousy hammer. I am not going to write my novel on a table, I am not going to programme my CMS on a tablet. The start menu has it uses and there was/is no real reason to kill it on a desktop. I use the start menu, the task bar, and the desktop icons. Note: I saw that Start8 and it looked nice and at $5.00 is certainly priced right; however, I wanted to present free solutions at first. The desktop thing from StarDock I have tried in the past and ended up leaving. Geeks, making the world a better place |
The funny thing about Windows is that it has always had the ability to support different operating shells but then Microsoft did not really support it. I have tried many over the years including lightspace; I believe that is correct name. The default shells from Microsoft have always been lacking and their file explorers can be a pain. I had to drop to the command shell/line the other day in windows to simply copy a file that kept crashing file explorer. For my desktop, I don't want big fat buttons. The reason tablets have big fat buttons is because people's fingers then to be fat, and you have to account for a wide range of finger sizes. You are pressing icons on the tablet to access the applications. For my desktop I can use a mouse that will let me click on a pixel, not 20 of them at once as with my finger. So, I can have normal icons and a start menu. For the desktop, it is the underlying core not the UI, that we are interested in. Is windows 8.1 faster than 7, faster at bootup although my machine never goes down, faster at opening applications, less memory usage, better window management when I have fifteen applications open at once. Tablets are toys for the most part, yes, we can check the weather and see if their is a cafe nearby and even use them for navigation but they are still more or less toys along the line of a bloody iPhone; and used for the "my penis is bigger" thing. I witness that one time at a party, everyone had their smartphones out playing "my penis is bigger" LOL. "Ah, but look, mine can do this" LOL. Geeks, making the world a better place |
i have 2 pcs that I put together with the same specs/hardware, just to see. One is running windows 7, one is running the 8.1. I also have an older pc running windows 7 and another old pc running XP still (lol). Out of all of them, the 8.1 responds a lot faster - in my tests - than the others do, hands down. Especially when I am playing one of my favorite online games. On my 7 desktop, I am only getting an average of 14fps in the game, on the 8.1, I am at 60fps constantly. This is my side by side comparison and results may be different for others. caredesign.net |
The weird thing is, my Windows 8 and my friend's version are different. Since I had massive errors and sent 100's of microsoft reports, my Windows 8 is always getting upgrade with new gadgets. I have the start button and he doesn't. Although Microsoft gave that to me after 30days. Also, you can run two Microsoft .net framework's concurrently, but only one is switched on by default, which is the .Net 4, I had to manually turn on 3.5. There's a lot of features, it's just about educating and finding out how to do things. I don't like how the PDF's & skype are presented on it though, that's annoying. |
