Hi, just thought I would start a new topic since it is quiet.
What are your general thought's on Win10?
I like the search feature of course.
I do not see much of a performance difference.
I guess this was/is tailored to the GUI.
The xBox One feature is cool, although my PC games are better IMO.

I have not tried the OS yet although I have been reading some of the info. When I saw the "can not turn off automatic updates" that made me decide no. However, I have learned that one can turn off the update service and there is also a registry hack to bring back the normal update config. Not only does automatic update update the OS, it updates drivers and that can cause problems. Already there is a reported issue with the pre-release version updating Nvidia graphic drivers from Nvidia drivers to a MicroCrap driver that screws up the displays. When one tries to revert back, the bleeding automatic update changes it back to the broken MicroCrap driver. Geeks, making the world a better place |
I am more and more inclined to ditch Windows and go with Linux and use WINE to run any windows app that I must have. Geeks, making the world a better place |
I'm using nVidia and the drivers didn't get replaced.
Updates are fine, they resolve issues.

I couldn't get myself to mess with my Windows 7 laptop that is working just fine... even with a free OS update. I might try it if I find the time to clone my HDD so reverting would be less painful. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
Waiting for Windows 10 Service Pack 1 before I do anything. I read it may be out as early as August.
At that point, I'll upgrade my laptop from Win 7 and see how it goes. Not upgrading my desktop until I'm confident there will be no issues.
I believe current Windows 7 & 8 users have 1 year to claim the free upgrade.

Do a search, this is just one link: http://gadgets.ndtv.com/laptops/news/windows-10-is-killing-nvidia-graphics-cards-720443
Drivers should not be touched by an automatic update; especially if the hardware is running a third party driver; it is often important that a particular driver is installed in order to get the functions offered by that hardware; graphic drivers is one such area. End users should decide if they need to upgrade the drivers for their hardware, not MicroCrap.

And evidently they can also crash your computer; just search for Windows 10 and Nvidia to see.

Windows 7 was a fix for the resource hungry Vista. Windows 10 is a fix for the horrible UI that MicroCrap developed in Windows 8 because they were stupid enough to think they could save money by making one OS for all devices. If I had a Windows 7 box that had no issues, I would also leave it alone. The only real reason to go to Windows 10 is if you have a crappy Windows 8 box. Geeks, making the world a better place |
So far everything is good except I don't have any sound and a coup!e of my programs disappeared in the update. I updated for two reasons, it was free and all the Xbox stuff. I'm at the point now where I use my tablets way more than the PC anyway so if someone hadn't given me 7 and 10 wasn't free I would probably still be using XP. Here is a WTF thought:
excerpt from Microsoft’s privacy statement that everyone can understand:
Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement.

From what I am reading, Windows 10 is a privacy nightmare. I can't wait for all the reports of hacks and personal data being stolen and posted online.

By default, when signing into Windows with a Microsoft account, Windows syncs some of your settings and data with Microsoft servers, for example “web browser history, favorites, and websites you have open” as well as “saved app, website, mobile hotspot, and Wi-Fi network names and passwords”. Users can however deactivate this transfer to the Microsoft servers by changing their settings.
More problematic from a data protection perspective is however the fact that Windows generates a unique advertising ID for each user on a device. This advertising ID can be used by third parties, such as app developers and advertising networks for profiling purposes.
So let's say you like to watch midget porn; MicroCrap and every third party that MicroCrap sells to will know that you like to watch midget porn. If MicroCrap's servers get hacked, then the whole world including your spouse will know you like to watch midget porn.
Note: Yes, I know that the preferred term is little people.

I am sure most of the 14 million users that have installed Windows 10 have no idea what MicroCrap is doing because I bet most, if not all, of those 14 million users did not read any of the 45 pages of the privacy agreement or the EUL or any other document that accompanies Windows 10. This was a response on a site: I think that might be the wise move for us all:
Uh, guys? Considering as Windows users no longer
control their own passwords, even their wi-fi and
network passwords, and pretty much can't no matter
how sensitive anything they're working on might be
without going through a lot of pretty non-obvious
contortions and registry editing and settings changes,
which judging from past behavior will probably get
silently undone during some service pack or patch
or other "upgrade", from now on Windows users get
their own segment on my networks. I'm firewalling
them off from everything important.

The best way to use Windows 10 is to go buy a laptop using cash and wearing a disguise so the cameras in the store can't use facial recognition, not put ANY personally identifiable information on it and only hook to the internet while you drive around in your car making use of stupid peoples insecure WiFi networks. http://towtalk.net ... Really?! Wow! Smart move. It's got to be the most popular Windows app after all.

We now know the new strategy from MicroCrap and why they were so willing to give Windows 10 away for free; the idea is to sell users information to third parties and to bombard their users with adverts for useless junk.
