What the hell going on with weird ad links?

Why are we getting those annoying ad links?

Yea. It's not likely your server but your own computer thus only you should be seeing it. Verify by asking your members to browse around your site and see if they get them too.

I could have sworn you used a mac. Rare for those to get infected.

There was recently some issues with Java exploits on macs, Apple has released 2 fixes in the last month.

I've gotten 2 software updates identifying the issues on my mac mini.

I also recently got an update on my Ubuntu machine addressing similar concerns.

I haven't booted to my windows partition in some time, so I cannot tell you if there's an update on that side, however, my mom has AVG on her XP machine and has gotten a couple of recent updates from them, so maybe they fixed it for the windows side as well.

It is just as easy for a Mac to get infected as any other computer.  Virus writers tend to go after the most bang for the bucks; there are more Windows machines to infect which means greater bot-nets etc.

I can not even remember the last time I got a virus on my machine; maybe fifteen years ago if then.  I don't go to FaceSucks and play games and I don't open links in emails that come from who knows who and I pay attention when my web scanner tells me that I may not want to visit the page I just started to visit.

Much better!  One click and now they're gone. Good job for getting in Macs but not for so long.  :P

Macs are just as prone to viruses and crashes as any machine.  PERIOD!

I disagree. I own one. I never once ever got a virus or malware on my mac. I am not saying it can't happen, but windows is most targeted and always will be unless apple can jump ahead of microsoft.

I worked for apple as a senior advisor the last couple years.

The infections these people got required them to type in their admin password to approve the software being installed.

In technical terms a virus is self replicating and installs without your knowledge or approval.  Cannot happen on a mac.

What these people get on their macs are trojans (programs masquerading as one thing and doing something else).

Just like when the SC Department of Revenue got hacked.  It was a fishing attempt by someone clicking a link in an email which went a website masquerading as their own.

Paypal and ebay were getting those a couple years ago as well.

MOST people don't know what an address bar is on their browser and fall victim to this type of phishing.

Dealing with people on the phone in the technical support field, you'd be surprised how MANY people don't know how to type and address into their address bar, they simply search for it.

The only time I got a virus on my PC's were when I did it on purpose for testing.

When I ran a multi line BBS (before the internet, heck before windows!), I had a script that ran on every upload that came into my system and rejected anything that had a virus on it.

I have seen in recent weeks, 2 email types that are phishing emails (from several different people).  1 is from fedex saying you have a package waiting for you, the other is verizon showing you an OUTRAGEOUS amount on your bill.

Both of these had links to a numerical IP address and were not the actual site.

The point is, ANY system can be infected by a trojan or a phishing attempt if the end user is careless.

Its not about MAC or PC.

Just my 2 cents worth.  We all know we are all careful here, and I am always curious when someone "catches" something.
