lol - i guess people do not understand the concept.

Yes there may be a few quirks that need to be worked out, but its free.

Yes, you will have to edit things to fit your needs, but its free.

Yes, there may be times you need a quick response, and are tearing your hair out, but it's free.

I have spent big money on getting a site developed, and have found it easier to do it myself using dolphin - AND IT'S FREE.

So, if there are those who do not like it - then by all means go out and pay for another setup or designer - and then realize you could have done it yourself - with time and patience and the desire to want to know every aspect of your site in and out - FOR FREE.

I think Boonex would be helped by having a good how to section. The curren't Wiki is not good enough. There should be a section where everyone was directed to first. A sign that it is not good enough is that there is rarely anyone pointing to that section.

After you had your problem solved then someone at Boonex should add the how to/solution to that section.

If you have a problem you're probably not the first experiencing this. First you start off by spending 10 minutes looking through posts that could be several years old. You may find a solution but that was for 7.0.8 or something. If you don't find something then you're likley to get the feedback "Search the forum"

If there was a section that was continously built with how to's everyone would benefit from that.

Yes, the forum here does contain good information; the problem is that the search on here is not very useful at finding anything.  When I don't turn up anything using the forum search, I head out to a search engine and usually get better results.

It would be nice that when a solution to a problem is found, we could post the problem and the solution in a separate place.

The problem with this entire concept is if you are a person coming in and just starting there are an complete list on corrections that have to be done that have been around for years.  It is as if it's groundhog day here all the time.  EACH AND EVERY mind altering issue like the pink background and 25 more insidious changes need to be done each time and the fact that that they are hard coded issues is the YellYellYell killer.  YES you can change it but it really becomes like groundhog day when you have to change it OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again and again and still you do not deal with the branding issues after you get done with all those changes.  It is as if it is a riddle wrapped inside an enigma that just should be a mod with options to handle the 100 tweaks that need to be done.  YES it is better for all of us because most will just walk away pissed because they did not have the intestinal fortitude to tough it out with people like _____.  They get frustrated and take their toys and go play in another sand box.  Boonex would sell this stuff like a franchise if only they would pay attention to what is already here in the very valuable forum and then make the ultimate mod that has options for each part that is a constant headache FOR NOT JUST ME BUT everyone who comes here.  Imagine an option that says this is the default #FFCCCC and this is whatever you put here like #c8c4c4 as an OPTION in a long list that covers all the variables that takes some more than they want to give to find out about!

Can't be done with a mod. Many of those things require changes to the source, and a module can't make source code changes. If it could, all of my mods that need source changes i would have my module do it automatically. No such luck. Well actually there is a way, but it's tricky and would be another server requirement that would have to be met. And it would also require a a couple of questions be answered as part of the configuration that 90% of people would not know the answer to. All i would get is a HUH?

Anyhoo. Dolphin over the years has removed a lot of hard coded css and stuff. They still have a few more to do but it's no where near as bad as it was.

It's improved in the short time I've been here....

But then again- that may also be relative to what I've learned over the past year and half too. IDK?

Deano I agree 100% all I am saying is Boonex seems to ignore hard coded issues that have been covered for years as an adjustment like the video thumbnail why in the world do they ignore such a trivial small fix but indeed a hard code issue!!! And thanks fir the update on why a mod can't be done...

Maybe it might be a better plan to build a core that you can stick with.

  • Develop the idea
  • THEN develop the script.
  • THEN bug test
  • THEN release beta
  • THEN stick with it till it's done.

THEN and only THEN start a new version.... 4 years I've been waiting. The final that was just released isn't any better than the 7.09 it replaced. New ideas in it sure, but nothing was 'cleaned up'./

First let me start out by saying i might bitch alot here in the forums, but i use Dolphin cause it is the best option out there. In some sick way I even look at all you people in the forums kinda like my own little Boonex family, we might fight amongst each other but I will be damned if I would ever let some stranger but in..... and if that little post was all and the worst you found you did'nt google enough...  it gets worse, trust me!

The problems with Boonex are the ones we all have come to know, we already know the built in chat sucks, we bitched about it here in the forums for YEARS and just like last week rayz popped up  and said "wait there is a problem?" There is the problems with certain browsers, the problems with the fact avatars suck and the fist pic uploaded is not the display, there is a list of things we all know about and see asked by new people in these forums pretty much daily.

But the biggest problem is people thinking Dolphin is "FREE"!!... and thinking they can run an "UNLIMITED FREE"  site on a shared hosting plan for 3 dollars a year or something.... that is where is all starts for everyone! The people who are gonna take the time out to post retarded bashing blogs about Dolphin are gonna be the same retarded ones who jumped in and said "I now own a website, it cost me 4 dollars a month, and im gonna be the next Facebook!" ,,, god these people make me sick, but they are here in masses. While you might be able to get Dolphin itself in a basic forum for "free", and you might be able to build your site on a "unlimited shared" hosting plan, if you even want to see moderate traffic and unique growth, YOU WILL SPEND MONEY!!... its not free, not ever gonna be free, servers, mods, techs (for when you are too lazy or busy to do it yourself), ads, it all cost money!... new people see the first bill in the hundreds of dollars and freak out, it is always what starts these idiots on a freaking cry like a baby campaign.

Like I said, there are problems, those of us that been here for years know about them. We all are here, and have been so long for one reason, we were smart enough to know this is the best option out there. Its the real world, people with cry over anything. Those are the same people that prolly now have decided to build an "empire" on a ning site or something. But if you are serious about setting up a social network, and have the money to get a site off the grown and a vision that is actully going to work, then there is no better format that I have found to do it on other than Boonex. Hell the free support you can get in these alone is priceless, I have had other site owners work with me for over 24 strait hours on major issues before and not even willing to take a dime from me when I have offered to pay them, you dont just that kind of "unity" anywhere else!

Thank you for both support and critique.

Just wanted to note that we never "ignore" issues, especially things that have been reported many times. We are prioritising, and as a result some things have to be pushed back in line. This is not just prioritising of certain pending improvements over others, it also about business strategy, viability, compatibility, etc, etc.
