What all useful tools do you have on your server? .. I think the one I use and love the most is Midnight Commander.. not even sure I could live without it.
Not sure how old most of you all are, but in the days before Windows ruled the world we ran on "dos" I remember my father and his friends who were the geeks of the 70's and 80's seemed to think Bill Gates was the Anti-Christ and my father refused to allow Microsoft products in the house, so we ran dr.dos .. was like ms.dos but put out by a company by digital research. Back then browsing files was done in command prompt and you has to cd\ c: bla blah bla everywhere you wanted to go till we scored a wonderful program called "Norton Commander" it ran on pretty much all versions of dos and allowed you to browse your files will a cursor and the enter key it was a godsend for saving time, moving, and coping files.. which I dont think I could had done without when I was 13 in 1989 and for that Christmas I got a MASSIVE 10 Meg SCSI hard card... the thing was amazing it was a drive that was built right on to a high speed 8 bit SCSI controller card! I remember people who were still booting off of floppy's and bragging about how they just updated to DUAL 1.4 meg 3 and a half floppys, they would see my massive hardrive and say "WOW YOU CAN STORE ANYTHING!".. but navigating that much space would had been a headache without Norton Commander.
Well since the begging of Linux there has been a Norton Commander knock off called "Midnight Commander" works just the same as the old Norton Commander does and allows you to browse your files with lighting fast speed. It allows you to do all basic file searching, deleting, editing, coping and so on,,, pretty much everything most of the word does by command line in putty. Sure file manager in cpanel is also easy and awesome to use but MC allows you to edit files from one site to another and move them from one to another with ease,, and you dont have to jump from one domain names cpanel to another. If you haven't heard of the program and would like to try it, here is a quick easy install for centos... yum -y install mc << just copy and paste in ssh and it will install and once it does simply type "mc" .
Now is there any programs that you use server side that make certain task a breeze to do?.. or programs you just couldn't live comfortably without?
