While I wasn't looking, one of my top menu links turned yellow.  Does anybody know what may have happened here?

someone must be accessing your .css perhaps. Try removing write permissions on the file.

By default the class for the <a tag is top_link. But his contains a second class which is the text of the link. So obviously he modified the top menu code to add that extra class.

I do something similar on my site, but i add a new class the the <td the link is contained in, and i use the database ID insead of the name. But the end results are the same. I can target each link with css.

Not really. That other post uses css attribute selectors. This method does not.
