WTF happened to Unity - seriously???

The new layout for Unity may look good if I was navigating on my 800" laptop screen!  Guys, seriously, the font size is just plain stupid and if I were a NEW visitor looking at Dolphin as a solution...I probably would pass just on the site's design alone.  It really is amateur hour...  ugh!!!

5 Nov 2012

Yea, i thought the same thing.

I have a 22" monitor running at 1680 resolution.

Now i need to go buy a 40" monitor.

I do agree. The fonts are way to large.

But i am guessing they also are running giant size monitors, so it probably looks good to them.

We're including Russian language and the ALT template with the default package, because we want to have better picture of how extra langs and templates work, what may go wrong and thus we can support 3rd-party ones better. Still, some issues may arise from using different languages, like in example where the long work in the button may cause the button to overlap label icon. We're collecting the feedback and working in it.

As for resolutions in general, we do test it on higher resolutions. We start from the iPhone's non-retina size and go up to 2560x1440 (most of our screens are at this res.).

This somewhat works.  Only in the case of this site, zooming out to fit everything causes some elements to become misaligned and look odd (at least over here).  I'll stick to my Stylish CSS.

This makes no sense. A basic tenet of webdesign is to take into account how your site will look on all computers, all browsers and all browser window size. Hence all the fixes we all have to use for IE, pain in the ass though it is. I'm surprised that the new version wasn't cross-platform tested (https://browserlab.adobe.com, http://spoon.net/browsers/, http://browsershots.org/ etc, etc, etc) to see.

I'm on a MAC 22" 1920x1200, although I keep my browser windows smaller (around 1200x1200) b/c I'm always multitasking. And here's what my first introduction to the new Unity site looked like compared to how it looked once I minimized it three times to get it to fit inside my browser window:

too dayum bigthat's better

So, that's annoying.

But more importantly, is this an issue that I will run into when I update to 7.1? If the width is showing in page builders as 1000 or 1200 but shows up with a heavy zoom effect like above, that doesn't work for me. Horizontal scroll is the suck.

If I zoom mine out as suggested so that it fits on the screen everything is overlapping and looks even crazier..

Alex - I'm sorry, but this is NOT a solution.  The font sizes are simply way too big, and quite annoying.  Zooming in just for Boonex on my browser affects every site.  Not only that, but it shrinks the size of things like the editor used to write this post!  I know you guys have bigger fish to fry with 7.1, but PLEASE take a few moments and fix Unity.

6 Nov 2012

This is rather silly. If I was browsing unity with a retina display ipad, I suppose it would be ok.. but I'm not, so it's not!

I have three 26" monitors spanned, and unity is still ridiculously "in your face" with its fonts.

While the average internet browser screen resolution today is above 1024x768, it is still nowhere near large enough to support what you guys are trying to do here...

And zooming is a poor solution b/c, as you can see in the screenshots above, it shrinks the other fonts in the menu, etc.. If all of the fonts were way too large then expecting the surfer to zoom out 3 times would make a little bit of sense, but only a little bit. It explains why the predominating attitude in replies to questions about how to make our sites more user-friendly and intuitive are met with replies of: "the user can just deal with it or learn to do an additional 3 steps instead of making it easy, we don't see it as an issue."

You can change pages width in Dolphin as you wish. However default width is 1140px.

But more importantly, is this an issue that I will run into when I update to 7.1? If the width is showing in page builders as 1000 or 1200 but shows up with a heavy zoom effect like above, that doesn't work for me. Horizontal scroll is the suck.

I wasn't clear enough in my question, evidently. If it shows in page builder as 1140px width like it is set here, if I'm understanding correctly, then I want it to show up as 1140px. As I mentioned above w/ the screenshots my browser window is set at 1200px and I had to zoom out 3 times for it to fit in the window. Which means, If I'm understanding correctly, that 1140px setting may not show up on browser windows as 1140px.

If it was showing up correctly then it wouldn't need to be zoomed out to view in a 1200px browser window, since 1140<1200. Follow me?

Hey Alex -  since you seem to be monitoring this forum post, I think you're not understanding what my issue is with the Boonex main site (Unity if I'm not mistaken).  The fonts are too big, and has nothing to do with page width or any setting that we can control on 7.1.  I'm simply stating that the newly redesigned site for Boonex has fonts way too big for my taste, and by looking at other responses in this post, I'm not alone with this assessment.

I'm trying to give some feedback to help y'all in the design.  If you respond to this post, please acknowledge what my topic covered - that would be very helpful Embarassed

The new site layout is great if you're using an ipad.  For most other computers, the old layout was much better.  Why don't you guys just detect when the site is being accessed from a mobile device and switch templates to better accommodate the mobile browser?  You are never going to get the exact same template to look good on both small and large screens, no matter what the resolutions are.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

Looks OK on my Galaxy IIIS in landscape mode but the print is too small if I turn it to letter mode. I also agree, it would be far easier to create a mobile template and redirect users using ipads and such. This plan will fail....

Mobile browsers can scale sites better.  Zooming out in Firefox makes the site look broken, while Opera handles it fine.  Google Chrome is the Devil's work, so I haven't tested it.

1366x768 now most common screen resolution. I running just regular MacBook Pro @ 1280x800.

Can we have please normal font size without jumping lettters on every design update? Could you guys please make some normal design and apply it finally? If you need help please feel free to ask me, I'm ready to help, design should look normal.

When I do Command_- to make it smaller I have to write with bigger fonts in editors, since regular sizes looks small. It's not a solution.

Hey everybody. Now, some time after the Unity design has been updated I can tell that my sales seriously went down. I'm not sure yet if it's related somehow to minimized usability of Unity or not. Does any more module makers experiencing the same or it's just me?

I feel that one part of Unity users went to update their websites from 7.0.9 to 7.1.beta once it was released (hmm, why beta is released for everybody, btw?). Sales should pick up when they will be finishing with updating their sites. I hope so.

I unsubscribed and subscribed again to this thread and got notification on the mail. Strange.

There's many cool new modules on the Market and I just released a good one, people keeps sending me emails like "How to purchase your module?" or "Do you have more modules than this one I purchased?".

I think the UI should be designed and updated in first of all. Big beautiful button "Buy this module" or something.

My work has fell off, I don't sell modules but did get site work.

I say it's the new format here at Unity, place looks like it was made for kids.

I have even stopped coming to the forums because of the awful "new" layout.

I can see why module sales would fall, newly released beta for all to use and update live sites, a few updated modules and this boring forums site!

That's strange to see how people are asking me (and sometimes not asking but just doing) if I recommend to update their working live website on 7.0.9 to 7.1.beta. Maybe not everybody knows what "beta" means. What if I gonna sell beta versions of my new modules? :)

Anyway, sales went down about 80...85% I can tell. And not just because of design, but because of membership price now is 400%. I think it should be the same or different price for existing members. This way Boonex could keep existing members.

I'm ready to pay some %$% from my modules sales to boonex instead of increasing the membership price for people, but to keep it coming.

It would be nice to be able to chose between two types of sites.

One for them, and one for US.

Do they actually listen? Perhaps they are waiting on us to get used to it.

And the endless questions being asked in "7.1" that have been answered before because of similar problems related to .9; yet no one bothers to search this site for questions and the answers.

I'd rather be eBaying.. or, oxwalling, who has a new release coming in a few days, looking very good..

I can't think of once in my time here and on expertzzz that they ever admitted they were wrong or changed anything back because of member complaints. If I had a site and I changed the format and 99.9% of the people told me it looked horrible and was almost un-usable I think I would change it back.. but that's just me. The desktop version of Boonex looks like a mobile version to me now.. and not a good one.

WTF HAPPENED TO UNITY?

--------

Let's see...

1. We've removed quite a lot of stuff. No more ad-blocks, no more side menu, some redundant side-links and some marketing-blurb pages were killed.

2. We've opted for a wider layout, which, admittedly, didn't work for many, so we've added a thin one that you get automatically, when browser screen is resized.

3. Market browsing pages were converted to 3 (2 in narrow mode) column layout, instead of 1 column. This arrangement is rather typical for online stores nowadays and is generally familiar for  freshers.

4. The product pages are now 100% wide, giving vendors more space to insert sceenshots (this was the single most important driver behind "wider" idea - we wanted sceenshots to be accommodated).

5. The whole site is generally using larger fonts, which are, more legible.

6. We do listen, and gradually make improvements, adjusting fonts, adding extra "buy now" buttons, testing different browsing options, adjust menu sizes, etc.

7. Sales deterioration is not uncommon for version-upgrade period. This affects us as well, and knowing about poor conversions we also hold back on some advertising that we normally do. This should return to normal with full version, and some push. Beta 2 is almost here, and release will follow shortly after. We're also going to promote some of the 7.1-compatible products to re-activate things.

8. License price is not an "admission ticket" with Dolphin. Admission ticket is free. License is a VIP ticket, and "VIP" clients are also the kind that's later passed on to buying more and being better to deal with when working with Unity vendors. I know it's hard to accept a "400%" change, but it is only so for those looking at relatives. In absolutes, it is still a great, great, great value. This price is also peanuts when put in perspective... but that's a whole 'nother subject that I think we've been through.

9. Any specific ideas and suggestions are very welcome.
