Using boonex RMS server certainly does not work

Hi

I finally found a web host that pretty much supports a default install of dolphin. YAY! That was 6 webhosts later. I now turn my attention to the ray plugin settings. On previous installations I was just always presented with a blank window, upon trying to launch the plugin window in dolphin admin for Ray. Now, I actually get content in the Ray plugin window (YAY!) with the new webhost, having done exactly the same thing on this web host as I have done on all the other webhosts (I have tried webhosts including 1and1, Yahoo, Streamline, Lycos and two other small ones). Not gonna say who it is as it violates that terms and conditions of the forum i.e. no advertising. However it is not the one advertised as the "recommened" site to use by the boonex site.

My main problem is that the boonex free RMS server CERTAINLY does not work at the mo. I am sure it has worked in the past, but it really does not at the moment. I see many posts of recent from long time boonex members scoffing at the suggestions from newbies posts that the free server does not work. However it certainly does not work as per the instructions on the website. I have parsed all the forum posts and there appears to be mass shrug of the shoulders to this.

I will bow down and retract my comments to anyone who is able to prove otherwise.

Cheers

Paul

I don't have an answer to this but I'm just using a low cost shared server and I noticed remarkably good video player performance.  I have never loaded RMS, and I don't think it is using the Boonex system.  Is it even possible to install RMS on a shared server?  Does it improve things significantly on systems that use it?

Rob

p.s.  Thought I would post some rare good news.

CalTrade,

if the shared hosting environment is setup to run a dolphin script then in most cases RMS would be installed on that server, or even instances of of RMS installed on that server. but typically if you are paying for a standard shared hosting account, then no, they are not goin to allow you to install RMS, as they will point out that their server is a web server, and not a media server.

there is a tremendous difference in using an RMS account that is not on rms.boonex.com they have every swinging tom that has installed this trying to use that servers resources. i remember back when before boonex unity existed, the big complaint was crossovers on the ray chat widget. lol, there was some adult oriented site that was feeding over onto a bridge community. you know that had to go over well. lol

well there you go.

I played with the free version a while back just to test it out. The Free RMS was one of the things I could never get to work. I must have tried for 2 weeks or more. Made some edits, changed settings you name it, nothing worked. It just wouldn't connect.

So I figured I will try another rms server(non-free). And pretty much instantly after entering in the rms settings into ray base...everything works like it's supposed to.

The rms for the previous version did work, but went down or had problems fairly often, but it did work when testing it.

This latest free version I've tried a number of times and I've never been able to get it to connect.

And using your own rms or a 3rd party rms should be much faster and then some even on a slow server when 3 million others aren't trying to connect to it at the same time!! Ok maybe not 3 million but you get the idea, something free = a ton of connections, something not free = less connections and more quality, less congestion, and much more smooth and available.

Does the FREE dolphin have to connect to the boonex RMS server?

I believe I have correctly configured an RMS server following the guidelines.  The JAVA processes are up and running and are listening on the ports that are suggested.  The firewall has been opened to allow access.

When I try to use that RMS server in my dolphin/ray configuration I get the unable to connect message.

It is unclear if the FREE version must use the boonex RMS server specifically setup for use with the FREE dolphin/Ray packages.

Thanks.

You can use any rms server. Talk to DosDawg or Sammie. They can help you.

Sammie or DosDawg, can you lend some assistance.

Here are the ports that are open on the server for RMS:

java      16219       root   73u  IPv4  55078       TCP *:9999 (LISTEN)
java      16219       root   75u  IPv4 372875       TCP mydomain.com:58037->mydomain.com:41741 (ESTABLISHED)
java      16219       root   76u  IPv4  55080       TCP *:41741 (LISTEN)
java      16219       root   79u  IPv4 372233       TCP mydomain.com:41741->mydomain.com:58037 (ESTABLISHED)
java      16219       root   87u  IPv4  55092       TCP *:1935 (LISTEN)
java      16219       root   94u  IPv4  55095       TCP *:8088 (LISTEN)
java      16219       root  108u  IPv4  55168       TCP *:5080 (LISTEN)

Per the documentation, ports 1935 and 5080 were opened in the firewall.  Ports 1935 and 5080 were selected in the client configuration.  After saving the configuration, I receive a can not connect to RMS server error message.

I notice there are several other ports that are listening.  Is this just internal communication, or do these ports also need to be opened?

I have added the domains to the access file and have made the other changes as per the documentation.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Per the documentation, ports 1935 and 5080 were opened in the firewall.

Double check that these ports are set for two way (IN/OUT) TCP traffic  .....

ok  .....  I'm out  .....  not familiar with RMS server .....

Doubled checked, and triple checked.

TCP ports (1935, 1936, & 5080) are all accessible from the internet.  Outbound traffic is also configured properly.

Is the WIKI for installing RMS still accurate?  If one is installing RMS_3.5.1 are the ports listed in th WIKI still the ones that are used?  There are posts which make it sound like the newer RMS server uses different ports then what is listed in the WIKI documentation.  If the WIKI is not accurate, can someone please post accurate information.

Thanks.

Ok, I have my own free version of the RMS server up and running.  After taking a hint from another poster I unchecked the Use RMS server box and it now works.  If that is not counter intuitive, I don't know what is.  What is that check box for?  Is this a boolean bug based on the toggle of this check box?  Either way, it does not make sense.

For what it is worth I am using the RMS-LINUX-v.3.5.1 of the RMS server on a CentOS 4.6 platform running jre 1.6.0.  I am using Dolphin Free 6.1.4 to connect to the RMS server.  I am using ports 1935 and 5080.  I still have 1936 opened per the documentation although I can not see where that port is used.

Ok, I think if you are using the FREE version of Dolphin v6.1.4 (RMS_3.5.1) you can not use your own RMS server.  Although I finally got some server parameters to be accepted (without receivingthe "unable to connect to RMS server" message) in the base settings of the Rays plugin admin panel, it still does not appear to work.  When trying to use the video profile and Instant Messaging, they still do not function.  You receive the endless connecting spinner dialog box.

Even with the base settings pointing to use my local RMS server, when I sniff the network, there is still a call to 'GET http://rms.boonex.com/ray/XML.php?module=rms&action=getADS&widget=video&app-recorder&_t=105

This to me does not look like the Rays base settings are being accepted.

Are there any options to enable debugging for turn on logging for the RMS server?

If someone has this working correctly can you post your a bit about your environment, the settings you are using in the base settings, the contents of the access.dat, and the contents of the red5-web.properties files (specifically the webapp.virtualHosts parameter)?

Thank You.

For anyone keeping score at home....

I am using dreamhost for my shared hosting environment and the RSS stuff, custom PHP blocks, etc.. were not working for me.

From post above, you can see that it worked fine when I installed Dolphin on my local Linux server.

After a bit of debugging I added the following to my php.ini file on Dreamhost, and now the RSS stuff and PHP blocks are working fine.

allow_url_fopen = on

Possibly this is the same problem people are having on other hosted environments.

I thought I would throw this idea out there since I believe it is better then saying your hosting environment sucks because it works fine on my hosted environment.
