Upgrading from Dolphin 7 to (soon coming) Dolphin 8 possible?

I want to use your software, but I recently heard that you will be upgrading to Dolphin 8 soon. Is it possible to install Dolphin 7 and then upgrade to Dolphin 8 without problems or should I wait for version 8? I am afraid that I spend so much time to set up Dolphin 7 according to my needs and then when I want to upgrade to version 8 everything gets messed up and I have to edit and adjust everithing.... Will I be confronted with this issue? Or will the upgrade be easy and my settings will remain??

The only thing that may be coming 'soon' is Dolphin 7.1 Beta. Meaning, D7.1 will go through a couple of betas before it's released as 'Stable'. So there is still alot to do before even considering D8.

You are more than welcome to wait for D8, but you will probably not see that version anytime this year. Thats just my opinion.

My suggestion is if you want to go ahead and use the software, download the 7.0.9 version and run it. When D7.1 gets through it's betas, there will be an option to upgrade.. When D8 comes into play, I'm sure there will be an upgrade path for it as well.

I do not even think dolphin 8 will be out next year either.

Live in the now, not the future. I would not wait. If you keep waiting for the next version that is all you will be doing because when dolphin 8 finally does come out, they will be working on the next one which you will then need to decide if your going to wait some more.

oohh, hehe :D I didn't know that it still needs so much time. I think I was missinformed by a friend of mine. He said D8 is coming out soon....so I though maybe "in the near soon" !

I have another question concerning upgrades and language packs: If I make a language pack for my language (which is Persian) and make the template right-to-left, will I lose all the translation work I've done when I upgrade to the next version? e.g. from D7.0.9 to 7.1 ??

The problem is that it is not enough to just make a language pack where you just translate the words in the target language (in the xml file). I also need to edit the templates css file and maybe some other files (which I am not sure yet) in order to change the site from LTR to RTL...

D7.1 and D8 are:

1. Rather different, technically. Although they are based on the same D7, they're different in many ways. I would say that the only aspect where similarity matters with them is that developers would be able to upgrade their modules relatively easily, providing they're good developers and know what they're doing. As for web-masters - there's no degree of similarity web-masters can count on.

2. Rather different, functionally. It's not about features so much, but rather about the goal, the purpuse of D8 - it is going to be different from D7.1. It may or may not fit your goals, so if D7.1 is what you need - don't wait.

3. Rather far away in time. D7.1 is about to be released. D8 will take months and months before it's production-ready.
