Updated Unity Forum

Looks good, just one caveat! Is it possible for the Index Menu to remain when I click a forum such as Dolphin 7 (Ajax would be good)?

That's almost funny.  They just spent a bunch of time getting rid of a bunch of ajax.

Now we're trying to keep things simple. Adding Index Menu on the side would definitely add a lot of clutter. I take Webmasterworld.com as a good model for forums organisation - time-proven leader.

I am not suggesting you add anything. I would like the menu to remain when I click on a menu item.

the standart of the forums is :

portal (like first page) where you can place news banners members online etc,

after is the forum index where is the forum in the main page and left and right you can place,

last posts last topics etc.

All these can stay in the inner pages.

Maybe is good idea the index on the left side but i am not sure if it will be helpfull in a big forum.

I think is limiting it but i like it.

About Ajax The best thing for forums is the last post and topics to update with out you to have update the page every time.

Here is needed Ajax.

Because they removed a lot of Ajax that doesnt means they have not to use the most usefull think for a forum.

I am sorry Andrew but for me this is big mistake,

this is a webmasters forum  that they know what they look for they go and finish fast.

A public forum is for people to spend time , exchange info have fun etc.

If the have to go everytime in the index to find a topic or to see if something new is posted this will make them tired.

I agree that speed is important and organizasion but in a dead forum is not help.

I would prefer the standart look and functionality of VB or SMF etc

The main Forum page has got to update itself or people will get tired. I know I would not be a frequent visitor if I had to keep refreshing the screen.

Ever hear the saying 'Don't throw the baby out with the bath water'?

Ps. Where is the cursor, this too has disapeared.

Adding a signature is done in a weird place.  It should be on your profile page somewhere.

So you have to enter a new post to correct a spelling error on your sig.... OK makes perfect sense.

Ok, so the updated forum does not refresh automatically.... I suppose we will have to wait for a boonex staffer to come up with a paid for mod.

A bloody typical.

There should be an option to "reply" at the end of every forum topic page. I had to navigate to top to post a reply.

This is incredible... seriously! I can not wait to start updating my site with the new forums, as this is the biggest thing holding my community back right now.

Automatic refresh is a lazy luxury. As HL stated, name one major forum system that currently does it. The old boonex forum platform does not count, because lets face it - it was HORRIBLE. I hope I can say that with no hard feelings, as what we are presented with now is one hell of an improvement.

It looks like there will be plenty of customization that can be done with a template - but I am liking the base layout quite a bit already.

Don't get me wrong, there are still plenty of improvements that could be made - my browser hangs up for a few seconds when I hit reply, the MCE will immediately load but it's 5-10 seconds before the cursor starts blinking and allowing me to enter text (might just be on my end though). The other thing that has always bothered me is the topic links/navigation (New Topic - Post Reply - Subscribe - Permalink) only shown at the top of the first post. When you are buried 20+ posts into a topic, it would be nice to see this link bar at the bottom of the last topic so users don't have to scroll all the way back to the top just to reply. Would be nice for the MCE to load at the bottom of the page as well so a user can review the last post easily while making their reply?

Will we be able to display a users membership status/title under their user name with ease? Or how about other profile attributes if we wanted to display them? I see a lot of need for this...

reply option should be at the bottom and top of forum.

also signature option can be worked on to work everywhere on site. for example members can update their signature in edit profile field and same signature will work in blog posts group post and other related places in site.

I recommended that in the Betas and RCs forum.

A lot of the Ajax has been removed, including the live updating. I, for one, welcome this change.

So you have to enter a new post to correct a spelling error on your sig.... OK makes perfect sense.

You can also just edit one of your existing posts. Either way, it should have been moved to the account page. This would have made sense if Orca was still standalone, but now it's integrated.

Edit: They've removed the ability to edit your signature in a post being edited. I hope they've kept this in the latest repository code.

I don't know why BoonEx would release a modification for sale that would only apply to this forum. Dolphin 7's forum has always lacked a front-page spy, but includes it on another page (this one does, too). If you want the spy to return to the front page on your Dolphin 7 forum, you can make a little modification yourself.

Live updates on "Recently Updated Topics" make little sense - you will look at chaotically moving/jumping blocks that you won't be able to read one by one. Think about it. We could make them auto-update and add a play/pause link, but it's easier to refresh, since forum loads fast enough anyway and you only do one action.

You still have your live updates in "Latest Post" section, the old "Spy" essentially. In your Dolphin install you had it separated for a while now. You can still choose to have either one of 3 pages as your Forums home using Menu Builder.

'Latest Posts' thanks, that's all I wanted. I spend a lot of time working on my computer with the Unity forum in the background. This enables me (auto update) to watch what is going on and to see if there is a post that is of interest.

Thanks,

Stuart

Yes, I am having the same problem in FF.  Had to guess where I was even typing!  It's awful.  And I can't use IE7 because I get a blank home page!!

It seems they've just pushed out a patch that resolves the cursor issue. They've also updated TinyMCE. And they've also resolved all issues with the editors when using Opera.

I don't understand why you're (or anyone is) still using Internet Explorer 7.

Mainly because the bulk of my members use IE and I have to make sure what I create works in it.  There are other user-friendly reasons, such as the ease of certain actions like cut and paste.   As for upgrading, from my experience IE8 does not like XP.  (I do all my ADMIN work in FF.)
