I created an event for a Golf Tournament, and uploaded graphics of all 18 holes of the golf course. Every single one of these picture appeared on my wall. WHY??? The onle thing that should have appeared on my wall is the fact that I created a neew event with a link to that event. Who wants to look at every single detail? The idea of the wall is just to give others a brief summary of your actions, not chronicall them in abundant detal.
Boonex, you need to clear your heads a little bit, and use more common sense. Get the shared photos concept out of your heads.
The wall should just give an outline of my activity.... it should not be a billboard for every last detail of what I do.
Events stand alone. They advertise something happening. There is absolutely NO reason whatsoever for event photos being displayed anywhere other than directly viewing the event. Same with event videos, sounds, files.... everything.
Exact same concepts apply to groups. People create groups to collaborate and interact with selected other people, and they most often have no desire to broadcast their photos, videos, files, sounds, or anything else all over the site.
Right now, I'm the only one with items on my wall, but my wall is already a great big pile of garbage that I have no interest in looking at. I can't imaging what a trash heap it's going to be with activity feeds of 20 other people.
Boonex, tear down this wall. .... or at least simplify it. we don't need a huge thumbnail of evey single photo that we uploaded. A single line of text that indicates that we uploaded new photos on mm/dd/yyyy would be sufficient. If anybody is interested, they'll go look at them. Keep the useless clutter down. Simnplify!

I did not read all your message because it seems like an example of how busy the wal gets, but I do agree with your initial title.
The wall is a great idea, but still only in its infancy.
I have written several requests and no one ever responds to my suggestions for the wall.
It too bad, because it's a great idea.

In next beta all photos, videos, sounds, files will be posted in a hidden album, and will be shown nowhere. Though some traces of it will appear in spy and wall, wall will display that user uploaded private photos, videos, sounds, files.
Maybe in Dolphin 7.1 we will get rid of shared photos/videos/sounds/files concept.

We already asked BoonEx to kill shared media concept several months ago, giving lot of arguments. Keeping these shared media was a BoonEx wrong choice. "Maybe in some next version..." is not at all a recevable answer !
To inform all of the site's users (in Spy, Wall) that a member did upload private photos, videos, etc... is another as bad as possible idea... tsk tsk...

I disagree. Facebook does a wonderful job of notifying other members in your friends list of your activity. I do agree that not every member on the sites need to see this information, but at least by default your friends should see it. It makes the site much more useful and interactive. Otherwise members have to manually check the media areas and/or your profile to know what is going on.
If sharing medis notifications are removed, it will be a huge leap backwards. Instead, consider modifying it as described in my prior paragraph. Seriously, it's more important than you think.
Facebook's success is partly due to is friend notifications and the ability to respond to thos noticies. Myspace is trying to catchup in the same manner. Dolphin should be right up there too.

There is no reason to override the choosen privacy level. If a media is set to Private, there is no reason to show any info about this media to all friends... for that there is a Friends privacy level... Lavinco, you are missing the point. The point is, the wall that will be be so cluttered with useless information, such as every single event photo that was uploaded, that other members won't even want to look at the activity feed. A simple text statement on the wall that says I created a new event, is sufficient. Same with photos... we don't need a huge thumbnail of every single photo thais uploaded.... just a notification that I uploaded nenw photos. The wall is supposed to be an activity feed...NOT an encyclopedia. Why do you think twitter is so popular? Do you think it would be as popular if every post was a thousand word essay? People just want a quick description of what's going on.... if that brief description piques their interest, they will investigate further... if it don't, they won't.
If I create an event, people join because they want to participate. People that don't join the event.. Don't want to participate because they have no interest in it. I think it would be safe to assume, that the people that chose not to join an event, have no interest in looking at those event photos on my wall.
The exact same is true for groups. This is what privacy settings are all about. People still share photos, videos, and other media..... the difference is, those people get to choose who they share with. Indiscriminately shared media has it's place..... if you're building one of those sleazy porn sites and want to attract every lizard on earth.

I haven't been following this arguement because media is not critical to my initial plans, but is all shared media going away? I saw a site recently where members posted video "elevator speeches" (short business presentations) and I eventually would like to do something similar. Will this be possible if the "shared media" concept is elimated totally? This doesn't mean that only "friends" will be able to view this video, does it? |
Shared media is just Boonex's word for media that is completely unorganized. For business use this concept couldn't be worse. It would be like storing your business presentation videos in the same place as the videos from your friends bachelor party.
The idea behind storing everything in albums, is so that you can keep all related media in the same place, seperated from other media. The person that creates the album, decides who should be able to view the media by setting privacy permissions. Public being all site visitors, members being all registered users, participants being those participating in an event, fans being those who have joined a group(you can change 'fans' in language to suit your needs), private being only the person that created the album. There's also custom privacy settings where you can create your own classification of members.
You can still have media available to everyone by assigning the 'public' privacy permission. You can also upload media, create events, form groups, and specify exactly who may view the material. This is a very useful feature for business applications. Say you want to have training videos on your site for 'Company A' and only 'Company A'.... you can do that through privacy settings. Anybody that isn't 'Company A' cannot view the videos. if you want to have training videos on your site for everyone to see, you can do that too.
Now whether or not all this works as smoothly as it should, we will soon find out. There'e been a lot of changes and changes are still ongoing.
Shared media isn't going away. What IS going away is the inability to choose who you share that media with.

Good explanation. Thank you for that clarification. |

Agree 100% :-) Logical concept and clear argumentation.

I guess I'm reviving an old post from late 2009 but fact is its still not answered with a fine solution So, with all these comments and information. Does anyone has a solution to that issue? There must be some solution to end all these posts on the wall.
I have noticed some of the work of few magicians here on unity and I'm sure they can solve it.
Come'on guys! make these useless comments on the wall disappear.
:)

Hey Houston!!
Did you ever find a solution to your junk on the wall?
If not Houston.......we have a problem :)

RE:

I have really grown to hate that saying, but no.... after all this time, I still have too much junk on my wall. Somebody needs to rewrite the spy module, so that it aggregates some of the content. I sounded off about this in 2009, but I was just a lowlife scumbag noobie back then, so no one paid much attention to anything I said.... hell, they still don't.

haha....I actually saw a post yesterday where some guys here expressed their love and support for you. So you should be proud. As for all that junk, we have to do something about it 'cause it doesn't make sense. Do you think its possible to delete or comment out the sections on Spy mudule that are related to that stupid action?
I thought you could use your charm, connections and wits to get this thing done somehow. What I don't get is how everyone else can live with all that junk on their websites.

Well,.........if you make yourself lough that's a good sign.
So I guess I'll have to pay someone to fix this thing for me 'cause there's no way I'm releasing my site with this Spy thin on my wall.
