This is how I waste my money!!

Good morning all

I just checked my shopping history and just realized how much money I have wasted in the market place, due to upgrading to 7.1, vendors/boonex removing products, 7.0 templates or other (I got fed up and left out many 7.0.9 templates off the list below).

Please note: I have bought and use every day many great modules (that are very well supported)

Is it just me!

The list below tells it's own story and is in no way complete, or bears no reflection on any other person, only how I waste my money!

Yep.. That is a lot of wasted money. Most of those mods I never heard of. I only use a very few merchants here. Only the ones that are most active like Modzzz and Deano and so on. Those guys stand by there products and there has been really no real  problems listed about them. There is one I will not use again and bought only a couple of mods from him. But also said that his sitemap will work with all mods. Asked how and he wanted to charge me.. I don't use the mod and will not use him again. If you read the reviews and find out all you can, Then you should have no problems. I won't get something from people that have not had an account here very long or only a few products. I have however took a chance on a couple but lucky for me they stand behind what they built. I also have a bunch of different mods that cost when all added up but only a very few I have that are dead. But I also choose not to upgrade them because they really didn't help my site.

OMG, I have wasted sooo much cash here on modules ... several of them are no longer supported and developers banned from Boonex and other modules I just don't have the need for like I thought I would have when purchasing them.

i know in the grand scheme of things this is small conselation (i to have loads of mods that are no good now) but you can still use [DOL2] - News Feed (many thanks to newton27 for the next bit as it was he who told me this just the other day), change the code in the config.php file to 7.x.x it then works perfectly

Just looking at that makes me happy I've stuck with 7.0.9 for the time being.  I'd hate to upgrade and couldn't have the upraded modules to go with the site too.

That being said, I've bought a lot of modules that haven't worked, or kinda worked.  There's only a few really trusted vendors...

It could be worse... :-)

I have some sites that we kept on earlier versions as they worked, and continue to work.

Like my mom says, as she uses probably one of the first cell phones ever built, "why do I need an iphone, or new phone, when all I do is dial the numbers and press send ?"  and in that simplicity, it works.

I tend to NOT upgrade, unless I have CORE issues and requirements to do so.

It is a shame when you invest so much time and money into something and then an update can kill most of the work you've put in!

I had one project on the go that I had put a few years work into and was launching as a proper business shortly before 7.1 was due to release.

With all the promises of what new things 7.1 would bring and the realisation that 7.0 would no longer be supported or developed, it became obvious that moving to update to 7.1 would happen eventually.

Unfortunately, I had not only spent out on lots of mods, but also paid for custom work to be done on many of them to get my site to work as required.

Developers then got caught up in the work of updating all their market mods before custom work could be done so there was then a time gap where my site was forced to go on hold... unfortunately, I had some investors lined up who couldn't stick around and I lost a considerable amount of investment.

All due to the way 7.1 seemed to have a 'staggered' release between the update, and the market updates...

While some devs set out to work straight away (bless 'em!) and slog through their hundred plus products to update, others seemed to just wait forever before starting updates. One even told me he was not going to update until a few months to see that 7.1 was stable first...

All fine to do that, but it left a lot of customers in limbo. Still many mods have not been updated properly, some were not updated at all. Some had 'updates' released as new mods forcing customers to re-purchase just to be able to use them.

I do believe the way 7.1 was announced, then the gap before release, then the gap before market updates has killed off a lot of the enthusiasm for Dolphin, it certainly made me a lot more cautious about spending money on the market as I have effectively wasted a lot of $$$ already.

One thing though, for a number of mods you can update the config.php file on the mod to 7.1.x and some do work.

Why some devs have still not got round to this I do not know. Some mods I know require bigger changes, but there are some still that you only have to change one line of code and they work...

Shame we can't 'trade in' out mods that were made redundant by the 7.1 update!...

Some had 'updates' released as new mods forcing customers to re-purchase just to be able to use them.

It would be a rule for this. Some developers here will stop developing its old modules and then call the same module number 2. But those who have the old one will have to buy the brand new module to get new updates. If this occurs, the developer should be banned.

But the best thing is to check through the developer products, If you find the same product with two equal names but different price. This means that the developers are not so serious. Avoid buying products of this person. There are more developers who are selling. If he has done so once, he'll do the same again.

What if Boonex and their next version suddenly upgrade to a new version of Boonex 7.1 VIP and that version can not be updated with the current 7.1.4 without a new serial number. Not much you can do. Then you stand there with your old versions and for the new VIP version so you have to buy entirely new serial number to upgrade to this version.

I tend to NOT upgrade, unless I have CORE issues and requirements to do so.

I don't think it's so much as "it works fine, leave it alone" here, that works is some real world situations but not with software.

The main reasons for BoonEx and updating is security holes that have been found and fixed along with more and more features and improvements in speed, otherwise I would have picked version 6 and stuck with it.

I think 7.1.4 is the fastest and most secure version we have ever had, it's just this black cloud of the "Market" that has given BoonEx its horrible image/history.

Not all developers will leave their customers hanging with a radical upgrade of the platform as 7.1 was from 7.0.9.  It is listed as a simple point release but it changed so much that it really wasn't a simple point release.  For example, the template system is completely different to the point that any template written for 7.0.9 can not be used at all; there is no simple change to make them work.

Some modules simply could not be updated and a new module had to be written.  Many of the vendors did exactly that, wrote a new module for 7.1, and gave it to their current customers free of charge.  Some did not of course, requiring a new purchase; however, the majority of the vendors I work with did exactly that.  Of course I had the advantage that I came in at the end of 7.0.9 and I put off building the live site until 7.1 was released.  I had not invested a lot in 7.0.9 modules and the ones I had were upgraded, or I got to work by a simple config change adding in the 7.1.x.

We all know that Boonex's trusted vendor badge is a joke.  I suggested elsewhere we create our own trusted vendor list.  Of course Boonex won't give us a spot in the Market to list it.  I actually think that Boonex is not interested in fixing the Market.

I have been using Dolphin for over 7 years now, back when it was v5.1.3 and I can tell you it has been one precarious ride.

I have been through many a hoola hoop and on one too many rollercoaster rides from then till now.

As a rule of thumb, I have always tried to keep the 3rd party mods to a minimum. I have learnt to use mods developed by only a certain few members such as AntonLV and Modzzz plus I have heard many good things about Deano too.

Since we are dealing with a software package here, I do think that upgrading is a necessity if you are to remain competitive in the current market. If you don't upgrade then not only does your site begin to date in looks but you leave your site open to attacks due to security loopholes not being filled. Plus any new developments that take place would be missed.

Like I said, my time with Boonex has been a mixed bag of emotions but overall, it has been good.

Dolphin v7.1.4 is by far the most advanced and stable version I have used thus far.
