Start Website

This might be a silly questions but how do I begin building my own website? Thanks for the help!

You need to do some research on  web development e.g. how websites are built, how sites are hosted, web servers, domain names, website languages e.g. php, html, css.. Then try to download the dolphin package or some other simpler software e.g. wordpress. You can download XAMPP and wordpress and try to make a small website like a blog.

Then once you have a good feel, you can jump into dolphin. A good place to start with dolphin will be the HERE

Cheers

As stated by it is best that you try to gain as much knowledge as you can. Dolphin is a software that has the capability to work right after install, as long as you dont mind the "default" template, modules, etc.

It's customizing your Dolphin site to look and feel they way you want it to that will require the most know of what was explained above.

i would stand boldly and say if you are asking such a question here, then dolphin is not the place for you to start. if you have no idea about web development, servers, ftp, editors, css, html, php, and all the other gadgets that go along with a dynamic site, then you will most possibly cause yourself a stroke messing with dolphin.

good luck in your ventures. might wanna try godaddy WebSite Tonight, and possibly some of the less strenuous CMS's available on the web. this vortex will suck you in and spit you out.

@DosDawg: I do respect you a lot, so don't get me wrong...You may be quite right about maybe this is not the place to start, but I would add that "maybe" there and I can state that in our case, although we had no knowledge of building a site when we started around 2 years ago, we did manage to create and now run a very successful one...

@Linxxus: now, following what I said above, how did we manage to do it? Well, long nights, huge mistakes done, more long nights and lots of coffee. But, moreover, I would suggest you do as told here, read the tutorials, use the forum for questions, but above all, if you can, get yourself a good Agent!! That's what we did and he is the one we turn to when things get complicated.

@Francisca_carv - I have even made a blog post about this same type of questions HERE

Both you and DosDawg make the same valid points as stated in my own blog. Jumping into Dolphin with no knowledge or experience in web design can be extremely frustrating for some. Is it impossible? Absolutely not. However because of the nature of Dolphin, there are quite a few people that DO give up after getting so frustrated because they have no idea what's going on.

You say you have been working with it for 2 years, and some of us (including myself) have been working with it much longer. There are times when even we become frustrated as well. Dolphin is an amazing product that has ALOT of functionality, which makes it difficult to work with sometimes when it comes to customizing.

I do not think anyone is really saying 'run away as far as you can', but instead just preparing the member for whats to come. Its going to take a lot of work, late nights, and coffee just like you said.. The key to ANY project is to never give up!
