So dolphin is no longer free?

Branded version is free yes.

7.1+ claims to be a trial, but there's no expiration and the only limits are the banners (as daihlo said).  All features work.

Well When I downloaded and installed it said it was a trial version and there was no place I could see to get a free license the only place I could see to get a license was the paid one of 400$

But the software is fully operational without it. They now call this the trial version.

The nag in admin is going to be annoying as hell, but there is no way to stop it. My best guess is boonex decided to do that to encourage more license sales.

just so that Im clear, The permanent license that I have from 5 years ago would remain ok in the upgrade right? I dont have to buy a new one? (unless its for a new site)

Yes. All permanent licenses are still valid.

Well when I tried to get the chat to work it did nothing are the modules that come with it fully functional ?

 yes, its all fully functional. Sometimes chat wont work if your server doesnt have RMS running, or you havent put the RMS settings in your chat admin section.

Contact your server host and ask them for the RMS address. If they are recommended dolphin host they should have one you can use.
