Shoutbox turned into messanging?

Could shoutbox be remade into a system, where inbox is only a place where to receive a notification of a friend reply with a link to his or her profile. Then once there, shoutbox would show the dialogue/message thread only between these friends A and B? As a replacement for messenger? :)
