Actually, this is not a problem.  Hard to believe, isn't it.

Dolphin 7 has never provided admins a way to delete messages from the shoutbox.  I, and others, have requested the ability for admins to delete shouts.  This is necessary for when spam, profanity, or any other undesirable material is posted in the shoutbox.

I raised the issue in Trac and in the blogs:

http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/ticket/1250

http://www.boonex.com/unity/blog/entry/Common_sense_still_needs_to_prevail_at_Boonex

What did Boonex do instead of adding moderation controls to the shoutbox?   They decided to clear ALL shoutbox messages at a time interval specified in admin...... Brilliant...yes?   The shoutbox is scheduled for more sensible behavior in 7.1, but who knows when that will be.  If you read the above blog entry, you'll see that there are a few people that think its OK to have a nonsensical shoutbox because it's "non critical".  I maintain that if you are going to include a feature in a product, it may as well be useable and work properly.  Just because a few people think it's non-critical, or that they are not going to use it on their site, is not reason enough to completely ignore the fact that it simply isn't usable in a real website application.  There are quite a few website applications, where a shoutbox is quite handy.  In those cases, it makes absolutely no sense for messages to be automatically deleted every few minutes, and even less sense that the auto-delete mechanism is used in lieu of moderation controls.

Like I said in my blog post.... how hard can it be to add a delete button...

Log into your admin go to modules>shoutbox.  The setting to change is "clear message older than (secs).

24 hrs would be 86400 (60^2*24) or to make it longer like a week it's 604800 (60^2*(24*7)).     And to make it longer just do (60^2*(24*[number of days]))

PS no comma's in your time.

Hi. I was gonna suggest that you can delete the inappropriate shoutbox messages via your database which I have done many a time on 6.1.4 by browsing the table RayShoutboxMessages and clicking the red X next to the undesired message. I just tried it in D7B8 and even though there are messages in the table RayShoutboxMessages. I discovered they are now in the table bx_shoutbox_messages so you can delete them there. Just tested it.

This however raises another point.

What does the table RayShoutboxMessages now do?

As I am sure you already know but just in case you don't, you should be very careful when making changes in your database and I would advise making a backup beforehand.

I don't know why Boonex can't just give us a little 'X' beside all the shouts, directly in the shoutbox for inline moderation.  How hard can that be?
