Shark Ever Going To Be Out?

I have been awaiting a release email from you guys on the Shark script for over 2 years.  Will it ever be out? You guys have been testing it on your dating website forever.. http://4ppl.com

Thank You,

If I recall correctly, Shark was an enterprise-grade community platform much like Dolphin. I can only guess that BoonEx dumped it in favour of Dolphin as their de-facto community software platform, as I haven't heard anything about Shark since around early 2008.

Then again, I'm wondering what happened to allot of things BoonEx planned for.

It could, however just be due to BoonEx focussing development efforts on only Dolphin right now, which seems to be all they're currently doing.

Hello All,

It is still a big question what Shark will be like when it is finally addressed. Magnussoft is correct that when initially released, it was as he stated but Shark was pulled back for re-scripting and re-thinking after a few months. Over a year later, a new engine was written for Shark and has been used to power not just 4ppl as mentioned - but also Lovelandia, Expertz and others for testing and load handling assessment. That "engine" is known as Poseidon - also later referred to as Trident. Poseidon (the vehicle or chassis) will power the script, with Shark riding that chassis as..... I don't know - possibly part what you plug into it, and some things we develop to kick it off.

Shark will debut with version 8 software that runs in modular fashion on this Poseidon/Trident engine and the form it will take is still up in the air. It may have some elements of 4ppl, Dolphin or others yet to be determined but will have the modularity for adding/removing what a person may need on their site.

That was the plan the last I heard it, and after release of Dolphin 7, work is destined to begin on version 8 software (Poseidon/Trident) and the Shark script - whatever shape it takes.  For now - it is still simmering on the back burner and barely warm, while attention is focused on Dolphin.

Thanks for your input, Mike.

I'm all for supporting BoonEx and always call for patience and understanding in the upcoming release of D7 as I think the wait will be worthwhile. But, can you tell us about BoonEx's current business plan?

Not very long ago, Uno posted a great comment which I understood to mean: n[out-of-the-box] no social script will ever meet every entrepreneur's requirements, and so BoonEx is aiming at delivering a solution that would be stable and elastic enough for it to be the script of choice.

In a time when availability of social scripts is almost redundant, one key factor for me, whatever script I choose, is that it must do what the description on the box promises it does. The folks over at Elgg published this wise announcement not very long ago:

Borrowing from Apple's Snow Leopard, Elgg 1.7 will ship with 0 new features. After feedback from users like Chris and discussions with the core dev team, we have decided to tackle some bugs that have been found in Elgg core in order to improve Elgg core itself. Though we are excited about the new features we have planned for Elgg, it is agreed that current development time will be better spent making Elgg Core as solid and bug-free as possible.

IMHO, it is pivotal that we are assured that BoonEx will truly focus on delivering a truly stable and bullet-proof D7 while working on the "Next Big Thing" dimension of the company. The latter is probably what will ultimately make the difference in BoonEx's future as a player in the industry, but the former is what will make its market loyal to your product line and carry you over to accomplish the dream.

Whenever I window-shop for scripts out there (and I'm always on the look-out like I am sure most here are), I tend not to focus on the richness of features only, but also on two key things that are important to me as a small online entrepreneur: that the product performs and does what is says it does efficiently and that the company that develops the product in question has some sense of purpose and long-term vision. I need to feel somewhat certain that the product will be taken care for over its commercial life and that future development will be there.

BoonEx seems to have such a sense of purpose and vision for the future, but it sometimes worries me that thirst to get there, the future, overshadows the task at hand. If you release a D7 that performs flawlessly on everyone of its promises, I for one will be there to see Poseidon, Shark or whatever other creature you evolve into.

I enjoyed your latest video re D7 against all the other scripts, however, and I hope you take this as truly constructive criticism, the video should have been released when D7 was out and outperforming the others as the images on it promise it will.

I really want to watch that video again when 7.0 Final is released and say: yes, it does what it says it does, it performs flawlessly, and yes, every statement on that video is 100% on.
