Server crashing, HD needing manual FSCK...

What would cause this with a server...

crashing and giving internal error. This is the response from my host.

"The drive had gone read-only, we rebooted but it hasn't come back up, it may need a manual FSCK"

2nd time this has now happened in a week... server off for a couple of hours each time which is incredibly frustrating right now as Im right in the middle of a site launch and people are emailing saying URL I am sending them is not working.... really pro touch!

2nd time this happened (now), I was not even using the site.

are they not telling you what could be causing it? they have the server logs, they should be able to tell you more than we can with the limited information you have been able to provide here. tell them to change out the frigging drives.

Agreed. They should be able to tell you more than that. I am guessing it's a unmanaged server and they do not want to lift a finger to help, or they are idiots.

FSCK is like a chkdsk for windows and if you have to run it, then the hard drive has errors on it. If drive errors are occurring regularly it's best to replace the hard drive before complete failure.

Theyre swapping drive over tonight...

Hopefully will go smoothly and not cause lots of problems with setup tomorrow!

unmangaged or not deano, if the drive is calling for fsck more than once in a week, then clearly there are bad sectors.

 fsck --> file system check

as deano stated, its the same or similar to chkdsk on windows --> check disk (or check the hard drive and repair or disable bad sectors.

glad they are changing your drive because that is the kind of error you dont really want to see as this could create the situation of disaster recovery, and sometimes it does not always work out.

Host company has replaced harddrive and is back online.

However, my dolphin sites are working okay, although it now seems to be very slow compared to how it was before (on dedicated)

But, I also have 2 other scripts running, one to handle video, the other photos.

These are now no longer running. All the videos no longer are connecting, and I cant even log into my photo script. (both are just media management scripts)

Seems it was not a straight forward backup and transfer after all...

waiting to see if things get sorted, otherwise will prob move host and start with a clean slate.

It gets worse....

The forums are no longer working on my sites....!!!!!!

If I view the main forum page on my site with safari or chrome, it just crashes or shows an error page.

If I view on firefox, it shows me a page full of code.

Group forums 'sometimes' will show the forum headers, but then click on a post to view and there is nothing there.

This is really badly messed up by my host...

Told me it would be straight forward backup and transfer to new HD and was quoted 4 hrs.

That was 15hrs ago. It only came back online about 2 hours ago, and is full of errors....

Worst thing is, I just announced my site publicly and have people going on it. It is not working correct now, was all working fine before host made any changes...

Will be naming and shaming unless this gets sorted out as these are one of Boonex's recommended hosting companies...

Im now being asked, after all the work has 'been done' what the server requirements are...

Surely, as a hosting company, they should be able to just set it up as it was before???

Ive been paying for dedicated server with them for well over a year, its not as though this is a brand new build for them.

maybe the person who is working on your this server is a dumb person with no knowledge of dolphin.

so much to do....

Latest is they are installing Red5 on the server.

Should that have anything to do with the forums not working?

With Safari, the whole browser crashes if I click on forums.

Chrome gives error page

FF shows a bunch of code.

What is RED5 and what does it have to do with forums if at all?

I tested your forums as requested. I could not find any problems with them.

Oh. And if they are ACTUALLY installing RED5 then tell them to stop. What that should be installing is the RMS server for dolphin. It is a modified version of RED5 but it is not exactly the same. So make sure what they are installing is PERFECTLY clear.

And it has nothing to do with the forums. RMS is the media server for the video streaming portions of dolphin.

if your forums are showing source on FF, then most likely you do not have xslt running. hopefully the read the server requirements by now, however, as deano says, they should not be installing Red5, if you are looking to use that with dolphin. there is a modified version of Red5, and that is as stated, RMS, ray media server, and that is what you need them to install and configure.

if they did not copy the yaml file prior to swapping the disks, then shame on them. that is how you would have gotten most of the configurations back, but they should also have been able to directly mirror the drive, im not sure what they have going on. but seems they are really dragging you through it.

I have had problems mirroring a drive in the past that had errors on it. Perhaps a mirror could not be created.
