Script Spammers???

I am getting hit by thousands of spam hits.  SO far, the forum antispam and Akismet have kept the site clean, but I'm getting hundreds of junk accounts?

Is there any way we can block .ru and other sites without having to buy an $80 module?  This should be a core feature to manage abuseive users?  As it is now the scripts that keep creating junk accounts are pretty much like a denial of service attack.

Please help?  This is getting serious and I'm about to look for another site platform.  We are setting up a small community based hobby site, not a business site.  We can't afford $80 (as I am on disability) but as the site is, it is not useable in any shape or form due to constant spamming.

Don't allow any accounts without confirmation; that is set in the admin.  They will still be able to create an account.  The module access management is money well spent because it makes it easy to block countries.  The developer keeps the database up to date and it also has a feature that will prevent an account from being hacked by repetitively hammering it.  You can block x numbers of tries from that IP address for x amount of time.

GG,

I am disabled and it's all I can do to pay for the monthly hosting and the dolphin registration key.  I'm thankful that they allow me to do a month to month.  Our site is pretty much to get a small community together online to address neglect from our state to finish repairs on a highway that's been left in shambles for nearly three years, high crime, businesses leaving our area, and many disabled veterans who need support in our area.

I'm hoping to bring together a lot of people to do some good here.  I'm asking nothing in return.  Facebook isn't the best vehicle for the kinds of discussions we need to have.

I did have someone throw us a lifeline and cannot thank them enough.  Hopefully this will end the constant "cleaning" of the site so we can actually get some news articles posted as we have a new restaurant coming in, and some good things happening.  We hoped to get the site online during our fall festival but had too much spam to contend with to even launch it.  The forum spam block has stopped the constant junk in the forums... now to nuke feedback spam and comments.  We just about have the mess cleaned up and can write news articles.

There are some things you can do.  Adding blocks lists to .htaccess can get a bit clumsy but it can be done.  I have found that China is the worst offender for spam so just blocking China will help.

Send me a PM.
