SERVER NEEDED!!!

Looks like I may have to move server which will be the 2nd time in as many months....!!!

Pain in the arse big time.

So, any recommendations.

Been using dedicated, will need that again. Must be good speed, STABLE, and reliable, also good for support etc...

Suggestions?

How savvy are you server configuration?

rackspace.com has been awesome so far, lowest package is 512mb ram/20gb disk with their open cloud, 2.1ghz cpu & truly scalable as needed.

I think I'm paying $16/mo base price + $0.10/Gb bandwidth used (outgoing only, they don't charge for incoming).

It requires a great deal of setup, they will deploy whatever OS you want, but the rest is up to you (apache, mysql, ffmpeg etc).

I've been using Server Pronto unmanaged dedicated system with I think standard 10TB data transfer monthly.  Not sure what you'd want from Support but, they've been there when I needed a reboot or questions answered.

The only problem I'm not too fond of with them is that do not allow SMTP out on the box, you need to relay through their mail system which has a limit of 5k emails a day.

You can get them to enabled SMTP, you just need to provide them with more personal identification details, credit card info and sign a waiver or some sort.

Other then that... speed has been great and uptime has been nearly 99%.

My server was also provisioned in about 4 hours.

Here's a question, interested in viewpoints as Im not sure a host will always give the right answer, other than a 'sales' answer!

What would be better suited specifically for dolphin, out of the following.

Intel Quad Core Q6600

2 cores 4 threads

2.4 Ghz

4M Cache 1066 MHz FSB

4GB RAM

or

Intel Xeon L5310

4 cores 4 threads

1.60 Ghz

8M Cache 1333 MHz FSB

8GB RAM

More the focus on the CPU... one with less cores but faster, the other - more cores but slower...

Quote · 13 Oct 2012

My bet would be this one.

Intel Xeon L5310

4 cores 4 threads

1.60 Ghz

8M Cache 1333 MHz FSB

8GB RAM

It may be a slower CPU, but not by much. It has a faster FSB and larger cache and the server has more memory. So the Operating system itself will perform much better on this, and thus the webserver will perform better, so dolphin will perform better.

What do they charge for that? It seems as though I am in need of a server as well.

Have looked at HFW cloud, how easy is it to setup?

Can you use cpanel with it?

Im no server genius but the spec seems very low compared to a regular dedicated.

$100 will only get 4GB ram, 80GB harddrive (no good for me...) and 3TB bandwidth.

What drives me nuts, is no one specifies the upstream and downstream connection speeds to the server environment you are buying.  I think a lot of these people will throttle your site by only giving you a 10mbps connection, which is a pretty useless environment for Dolphin site with more than a handful of active members.

I'm with HFW. Works ok but I certainly intrigued by this idea. Seems like it could be a much more sustainable (cost wise) infrastructure.

the cost in this range is cause it is a CLOUD, which means you get all the benefits of running on a cloud environment. plus you will get a lifetime 20 percent discount just using the promo code "boonex" just the fact is comes with whm and cpanel is 30 bucks alone at most places

dont be confused, if you are looking for something that is just a good deal then go with one of their lower end deds or one of their vps's and again you will save 20 percent a month just use the boonex promo code

and the fact the techs there are knowledgeable of boonex always helps..

they also have cheaper clouds that are not managed http://www.hostforweb.com/cloud/cloud_vps.html

I am also with HFW on a cloud - recently migrated. The server appears to be working ok. I have to admit though, I am no fan of HFW as a company. "fully managed" could not be further from the truth, and the cloud is way over priced for the spec.

When better value clouds start to appear I will be migrating.

This is something I've always thought might be interesting,  Take a server setup like this:

2x Opteron 6128 (2x 8cores, 16 cores total) 2.0Ghz
Denver, USA

CentOS
64GB RAM

Primary Disk
1.5TB HDD
Secondary Disk
1.5TB HDD

Third Disk
1.5TB HDD

Fourth Disk
1.5TB HDD

RAID
4 port 3ware RAID controller

OS Architecture
64-bit

Bandwidth Plan
10Gbps Unmetered

Total monthly cost
$784.00

Pretty expensive for one person, but if you could manage to find 10 people to share he cost, there's a lot of processing power and connection speed to go around.  You'd have a lot more processing power and connection speed than you could ever get for that same $78.40 per month.

Does this sound feasible to anyone around here?   There would be some payment details to work out, along with some technical and management details, but the idea intrigues me.

sounds very good... unfortunately i dont know enough about servers to look after myself enough. Thats why i have to go managed...

I think the only issue I can see is that 10 people may all have different developers woking on the site and it may only take 1 person to hire an unscrupulous developer that does something to affect all sites on the server....

Would be very interested to see what others think though : )

Looks interesting.

Just set it up with WHM / cpanel, give each person their own cpanel access with a couple of 'head admin' sharing access to WHM and would be fine.

each person with a different cpanel wouldnt be a prob for developers to work on individual sites...

I would be up for this.

do they have an option for 100GB port instead of 10GBS?

I guess anyone who would be in on this would be a fairly serious Dolphin user, so could end up with 10 busy Dolphin sites... what if each person then had 2-3 sites each that got busy?

Ram, HD looks fine, but could soon start to strain the CPU and port?

Quote · 14 Oct 2012

you can't host that on a single server and 10 GBPS is enough for what possible on a server.

Well I finally did it.. I got so tired of all the hosting headaches I have encountered so I now have my own dedicated server. Hell, I probably bought more than I needed.

AMD Athlon™ II X4 - 4x 2.3 GHz

2x - 1TB hard drives

8GB Memory

550 GigaBit external connections

Just to show a few specs. Even after this purchase and even the cPanel license, I think I am much better off. Yes its a little more money every month, but hey.. Its mine..

BTW, HL made a very valid point above.. but thank God I don't pay that kinda money :)

Nothing to see here

As far as I know, there is no such thing as a 100GB port.  Did you mean 100MBPS?   Half the cost for the server configuration I referenced is for the 10GBPS port... that's 100 times faster than a 100MBPS port that I think you are thinking about.  When I said split the cost between 10 people, I also meant 10 sites.  The idea here is to get adequate processing speed for 10 sites, plenty of memory, and a really fast 10 GBPS connection the internet for serving up media without the bottleneck you'd have with a 100MBPS port in the same situations.  Also.... the server configuration I mentioned includes hardware RAID.  Then for a few more bucks, you could add a few 120GB SSDs and use them to cache files.  I think you could have 10 pretty robust sites hosted on one server.

You can check out the various options here: http://fdcservers.net/dedicated_servers.php

Have booked a dedicated today with HFW as I need to get my RB sites backed up ASAP...

my server seems to be one that is fortunately still online after the RB situation... have been told to set something else up asap and back it all up as it may go offline by end of this month.

Ive had a dedicated with HFW for a few years, all in all has been a good service.

Support has always been helpful. Stick with what I know from now on!
