Restrict access to "Profile Customize" module?

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to use membership levels to prevent access to the "Profile Customize" module?  I plan on having 2 membership levels (standard & business) on my Dolphin installation.  My goal is to provide access to the "Profile Customize" module only for those users that have the Business membership level.

If this cannot be done with a standard installation of Dolphin, is there another module that will give me this ability?  Alternatively, is there a way to add something on the database side (in the eval column) that will only load that action button if the end-user has a certain membership level?

I do not see this option in the allowed permissions via Membership Levels, so Im not exactly sure how this would be done.  But I would have to ask something.. Why would you want to block access to the profile customizer? I could understand blocking the access to something like the Chatroom or IM, or maybe even uploading videos,  but to not allow anyone without a business account to customize their profile? Hmm..strange. :)

If you knew my target audience for the website, you would understand my need to disable the feature.  My goal is to keep free members from making their profiles look like Myspace and allow business members to customize their profile.  I'm sure that I can pull it off if it becomes a necessary.  Just curious if someone else has looked into doing it.

Hello Beeneeb.

Do you have a solution for the problem?

I'm still looking for a solution...

This is an old thread but it is something that I want to do as well so hopefully the answer is yes somehow.

See, you have a basic free membership.  Then you have paid membership.  In order to entice people to pay, the profile customiser is a good area for this.  People will see their old plain page and then see the spiffy pages of their friends and want it too.  So it makes them willing to pay a bit for the privilege and helps to generate revenue for the site.

Yeah right.... just look what customized profiles did for Myspace.  You had an endless supply of aesthetically challenged people putting 20 megabyte pink and red animated glitter backgrounds all over the place, with pink fonts.   Watching all of their pages load would bring a person to tears.  This all created aftermarket browser addons to view myspace with graphic page items stripped.  This all helped bring down Myspace, and open the door for the more grownup look and feel of Facebook.  No adults I know personally, care anything about this sort of thing.

Anyone with a working brain should just delete the profile customizer module from the server.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

I agree. I agree wholeheartedly.  And if I can have anything to say about it, there will be no animated gif backgrounds on the site.  Wait, the profile customiser won't allow an animated gif background I hope.  I hate glitter graphics with a passion.  And bad colour combinations like blue on red or red on blue and six point fonts.

However, the users demand this stuff so why not make a bit of money off of it?.

If you have to count on things like the ability to change background colors on a profile page as a revenue source, I'd say your business plan  needs to be a little more ambitious.
