Replacing the font-stinky icons is a matter of uploading your spiffy icons to your site; say in /icons from your root. Then go into icons.css and find the particular icon you wish to replace; say for example the thumbs-up icon with your own thumbs-up.png icon.
.sys-icon.thumbs-up:before { content: "f087"; }
make the following changes:
.sys-icon.thumbs-up:before { content: url('http://my-nifty-site.com/icons/thumbs-up.png'); }
Clear the cache and reload the page and your icon will appear instead of the font-stinky icons.

why stinky icons? i don't think you know how beneficial font awesome icons are |
I don't like them. And I could care less about retina displays or my site appearing on a three inch screen. It is ironic that people go out and buy 80 inch televisions and then brag about watching a film on their mobile. Geeks, making the world a better place |
I agree. There is no way in hell i would ever give up my desktop. Those small screens drive me nuts. I could care less.
If i want mobility i carry my laptop. Full size laptop in a case is not any bigger then some of these over sized purses i see old women lugging around everything but the kitchen sink in.

Ah but it goes further than that and one of the major differences between 7.0.9 and 7.1 is these new icons.
PAGE speed is dramatically different because of the new icons... It goes much deeper than just mobile or "retina" displays.
I could not break the 86-89 speed test no matter what I did. The second the new icons were introduced the page speed went to 94. All I can tell you is from a page speed stand point of view it is a very welcomed addition. As far as SEO that is a great step forward...

Yes, there may be a speed advantage with loading a font instead of a small graphic. Of course these icons are so small, and if you optimise them as one should and any web developer worth her salt will, the loading time is not great at all. Plus, browsers cache these icons so the next time someone visits the page they are loading them locally instead of waiting for them to be downloaded; and since I am running a social site, members are keeping the icons cached. Your speed increase was not enough to convince me to use the ugly black, or solid coloured (you can specify a colour for the font of course) in place of pretty icons. Eye candy is important; otherwise it would not be such a drawing point in marketing. Geeks, making the world a better place |
Good luck with the optimization of that former icon setup. Let me know how that goes with the sprite and all... As far as eye candy to me that is what the content is all about... Csampson |
Actually, we are going to be creating our own icons. I probably won't change all of them, just the ones I think are necessary for better site appeal. Geeks, making the world a better place |
