I was looking at Rayz's RMS free chat; I have a few of his chat modules; some require RMS which is not installed on the server at this time. In the description he states that the RMS free chat is faster. What I want is some qualifications on this. Are there members here using RMS free chat modules? Are they faster than the old RMS versions? I would think RMS would be the way to go with handling member's webcam chats. Geeks, making the world a better place |
Five hours and no comments? At one time you could post and in five minutes have all sorts of comments. Geeks, making the world a better place |
hi gg, unfortunately i cannot give you an answer as i haven't got round to testing it yet (still a long way from launching my site) but i do have the rms free group chat installed, i will gladly give you a test account's login details if you want to try it |
The RMS free modules will be as fast as the person's internet connection. In a nutshell, the member's connection and computer is whats used to trasmit/process the audio/video within whatever module they are using such as Video Messenger or the main Chat room. So if 2 members are in the chatroom and 1 has a 50mbps cable connection and the other has <= 1mbps DSL, then the DSL member's audio/video is going to be delayed/choppier much more than the one with 50mps.
Although connection speed somewhat plays a part in modules that 'use' RMS, the 'processing' part is done by the server application. So in the example above, the DSL member's audio/video will be presented to the 50mbps member much faster than it would RMS Free. Hope that helps make some sense.

Thanks for the answers. I am more concern with providing the members with the best experience possible; which is what drives member satisfaction, than I am with the bandwidth used. At the moment bandwidth is not an issue and I can increase it later as needed if that is the only concern with using RMS free modules. Geeks, making the world a better place |
@GG - I think you may have misunderstood me. My statements are regarding a person's internet connection speed and not the 'bandwidth' available on your server. Its doesn't matter if you have a 1,000Gbs connection on your server and/or all the bandwidth in the world.
Actual ATT Speeds:
DSL Lite (up to 768)
Download speed: 224 Kbps down
Upload speed: 64 Kbps up
If I am connecting to your site from my home PC on a ATT DSL Lite internet connection, my upload speed will be close to 64k (if I'm lucky) my download 'speed' will never go faster than 768K. Regardless of your server configuration.
So, imagine trying to have a 'video chat' with someone who is trying to trasmit (upload) audio/video to you at a break neck speed of 64kps.. Your supersonic server will not speed up my internet connection hehe.

Yes, understood. No, I probably wasn't clear. One of the things that Rayz mention on the module page that by having the RMS free version I will save on my server bandwidth; which is not an issue at the moment but I can understand that if one does have limitations on the server bandwidth; more bandwidth used, the more I pay in monthly server fees. Let me just pull out what is listed by Rayz:
Here are some more advantages of these applications: 1. You shouldn't have expensive VPS or dedicated hosting to run RMS; 2. You shouldn't pay for audio/video bandwidth going through the RMS; 3. There is no huge load on your server when the chat is occupied by many users; 4. Video/audio quality becomes better and faster because video comes directly from one user to another without being transferred through RMS
I asked Rayz directly about this but he did not really answer. However, he did offer me the opportunity to switch my module. 1 is already out because I do have a dedicated server. So it is 2, 3, and 4 that I wanted others opinion on with number 4 the priority. I don't mind paying the bandwidth fees if my members have a better experience.

Oh I totally agree that you will definitely free up some bandwidth on your server using 'RMS free' modules. In a previous post you stated "I am more concern with providing the members with the best experience possible; which is what drives member satisfaction".
So using RMS Free has its Pros such as: 1. Not having to install, configure, and support the RMS application. 2. Not having to worry about bandwidth usage for those who are limited by their providers. And the others you have already mention.
Just understand that it also comes with the Cons like the ones I mentioned earlier where the ' user experience' will depend on their internet connection. If you are not restricted by bandwidth, then maybe the best bet would be to use RMS so that the performance from a 64k user is at least 'tolerable' hehe. Just food for thought.
