Ray EATS server space

Is it anyone who plan to build a big site with ray media server? I have this installed but just realized it eats space more than a HORDE of hungry lions.

A WMV clip that was 42 MB, is on server 160 MB as flv and 160 MB as mpeg. This is no way to run a real big video site. Any clip you upload will be copied twice, and 4 times as big as original. I have big servers, but still.

Even if i have 3 TB of hard desk, it will be eaten up alive if the hard desk space is 8 times the original WMV file.

I am sorry, but this is a dealbreaker. Photos is no problem for space, but everyone who knows about server busines, knows also that hard deskspace is always an issue with videofiles. This time, 8 times such high issue.

Who can run a BIG social community if videofiles will be 8 times of orginal. I mean, 1000 users who upload 10 videofiles with a normal 20 mb size each  will normally take 200 GB of space. With ray, 1600 GB. So, it does not matter, i need a SERVER PARK to run this i think, at least.

Dolphin may be good in many ways, but this was a total surprise. This should be mentioned somewhere...

It says you have the best video conversion tool there is. How come that a wmv file is almost 3 times as big after conversion?

Hi Budo - I mentioned something similar on another thread.    It looks like the new Dolphin 7 allows video wall posts.  It is pretty cool, but can you imagine how much disk space that is going to eat up if people start doing that with abandon.

Yeah, and i have 10 TB raid system in place. So, i do not think to many people have this big server. I probably will try to find someone to build around this problem, but how?

It will be quite expensive, and i am sure, not easy done too. I wonder why it need to be both an flv and mpeg format?

I tend maybe to keep just mpeg format when? And i have no understanding why the files get so big? I mean, if we talked about 20-30% differnce, but 300-400% difference, i did not know that WMV was so good compressiona format :)

The only way around this problem is to allow people to download a file in original format WITHOUT streaming capability.

No conversion in other words. I will make a extension that is called download, so people can upload all kinds of material there and download it. It shall be possible to upload some photos or a short promo clip (max 5mb) that will be converted to same format as existing for streaming only.

This is BIG work, so it will take some months. But it has to be done. I will put it up as extension on expertzzz.com later on.

But this is only wat to handle big file sizes in ray.
