Random users

I know this topic has been addressed many times in the past.  I have lots of new users on my site. These new users are confirming email. Lots of the users aren't from China or some other third world country. Many are from the states.

What is it about Dolphin these bots recognize? I'm getting several users everyday on my site.

Anyone come across a solution to this?

What recaptcha version are you using?

I don't have captcha installed yet.  I purchased email captcha by Deano, but it isn't compatible with 7.2.1 yet.  Either way if most of these users are confirming email, will captcha work?

Search the forums, this has been discussed in another thread and the solution was as simple as a question on the sign up form eg. "is a tomato a fruit or vegetable".

May I ask why you haven't installed Recaptcha which is supplied with Dolphin 7.2.1. It's excellent and it's used by thousands of reputable sites, large and small.

Go to Admin/Settings/Advanced Settings/Security

Look for the Recaptcha info.

Go to the Recaptcha site:

https://www.google.com/recaptcha/intro/index.html

Sign up and get your free keys. Enter them in the appropriate boxes on the Security screen and you're on your way to getting less spammers.

Have you noticed any pattern in the domains of the confirming emails (e.g. free accounts)? I believe there is a setting that can forbid those. Also, have you considered charging a fee to join? Even if the spammers are human that are manually joining, it's unlikely that they would be willing to pay even a small fee to spread their garbage.
