Private Group functionality within Dolphin?

I'm new to this community and checking out Dolphin for the first time.  I am looking for a white label social net platform upon which I plan to build a youth sport social network.  I would be greatful if members of this community can advise me whether Dolphin allows individual social network members to establish their own uniqu/excusive groups and, if so, what social networking functionality is available to group members.   Think:  could a parent or coach of a team come to my Dolphin powered social net site and be able to set up his own private team/group?

There are some possibiltys into groups, and yes it can be private. But at this time I want to advise you to wait for the new version Dolphin 7, this is coming out very soon (think end june or begin july).


Its almost better then the 6.1 version we have now. 
And you will love it I know for sure.

yes this is possible in the current version, have you downloaded the trial version yet to check it out? They are also so some relevant mods available at epertzzz.com regarding groups and events...

While the current release, 6.1.6 has a group function, and all the other functionality that you may need, you will find that it falls very short in several key areas.  The lack of privacy settings and lack of photo albums, top the list.  Dolphin 6 is more of a dating site script, than a social networking script.  Sure you can probably go buy some mods on expertzz.com and spend a ton of time and money on D6, but it will probably still fall short of what you need.

Dolphin 7 will change all that, but it is still in alpha.  Beta is due out toward the end of June, and a RC about a month later.  No one likes to wait, but I really think that, for your application, you'd be glad you did.  I have requirements similar to yours, and discovered early on, that Dolphin 6 just wasn't going to cut it.  I have put every single, major social networking script available, to the test in the last several months, and not one of them comes close to what Dolphin 7 will offer.

You can chose to start a site with D6, but don't expect that upgrading it to D7 will be a smooth and clearcut process.  The two versions will be as different as night and day as far as file and database structure.  Most certainly, any mods purchased for D6, will be useless for D7.

What sort of youth sports are you involved in?

I think you'll find some expertzzz will be providing free upgrades to their mods to dolphin 7, check on a case by case basis though...

My mistake.  I thought when you mentioned free mod updates, you may have been PUI.

Ok here we go again.  The last three posts help the original question how?  Coach, the end answer is yes it can happen.  Out of the box no, not exactly as you seem to want it.  You would have to do one of three things:

1.  Buy mods to accomplish what you are looking for

2.  Hire a coder to do your set up

3.  Learn the PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS, JAVA, AJAX you need to make the mods. 

So what you need to figure out is how committed to the project you are.  Could you use Dolphin with none of the above to get in the (sorry for the pun) "ballpark" of what you want?  Yes.  You sound passionate about youth sports, and I would venture to say that alone may be enough to carry you through.  I would start small and grow big, unless you have the funds, and knowledge to go big immediately.  I also think private may have been misunderstood, and correct me if I am wrong.  By private you may have actually meant a unique Group, for their members to associate that others may see just not change unless they are a member of the group then yes....the initiator can control who is in the group or not.  First mod.......easy and cheap....change Groups, to Teams.  I believe Dolphin will more readily do what you want than anything else out there....and believe or not there is a wealth of help here, even though they do not act like it all the time.

Points don't always need to be made with the same-old-boring-geek-speak.  When I requested some of whatever was being smoked, when I saw the comment about free mod upgrades, I was expressing my belief that such a thing happening is highly unlikely...... thus driving home the point, that any money spent modifying D6 will be money down the drain when upgrading to D7.

Okay, just to chime in on this, mainly because I can't resist, here goes:

Depending upon who you obtain your mods from over on Expertzzz.com, there will be some who offer free upgrades of their mods to 7, others who do not.  This is going to be on a case by case basis and will mainly be dependent upon who you obtain your mods from and how much flack they are willing to tolerate as to who will do what.

Now, as far as will D6 do what you want?  The answer is yes, but not out of the box, not even close.  Will D7 do what you want?  Again the answer is yes, but not out of the box.  D7 is still designed as a social networking script for the dating communities and as such it is not intended to be the next facebook/myspace script unless we the site owners choose to modify it to be just that. 

Finally, I apologize to all for not being around lately, however the new job in NYC is taking up all of my time and made it extremely difficult to find time to work on the sites software let alone come in and post.  But I will be around and try to help out as I can with all the newbies and even some of the more advanced questions that are fun to figure out.

I'm pretty sure D7 wil do this right out of the box, if all the rpivacy setting are implemented in a sensible manner.  Since that part is still missing on  the only live copy, it's hard to tell.

To all those who contributed to this dialog... a big thank you!   All very helpful.   And for the record, humor/color in the replies is always more preferred than pure geek speak.    This has been great.  You all have been very generous sharing your insights.

Coach one last thing.  If your site is pure non-profit and dedicated to Little Leaguers/Youth Sports I would voulunteer to help set things up for you.  I have a slight baseball past and would love to pas it down.
