Presence and IM Question

Do we need to have a RMS server for presense  and IM to work ?

I don't use a rms server, but my IM is working perfect. :)

 I have the adfree version of dolphin 6.1.1 and when I click on presense and contact a user the get the chat request and they accept but when they reply in the im window the get the message that i am offline and the message will de dilivered when i am available .....even though I am online....the same thing happens if the user tries to contact me..any advice??
