Photo Submit Thumbnail Issue

A few members have complained about the Photo Submit Thumbnail. Elongated photos are cropped, with only the middle section showing in the thumbnail. They naturally assume that the photo has been uploaded incorrectly and opt out before submitting.

Because the photo has already been uploaded, it means disk space is being wasted with unused photos and members are getting frustrated. As the thumbnail is meant to represent the photo being submitted, it seems logical that the entire photo is included in the thumbnail.

I'm not using the Avatar module.

How can I adjust this please?

Guess what, I complained to Boonex about this several years ago.  It was ignored.  The photo cropping is just wrong; Boonex coders crop from the wrong areas.  I was working on a site in which the photo thumbs had to be correct for both portrait and landscape oriented photos of members.  I rewrote the cropping code so that it was independent of what orientation of the photo the member uploaded and it properly cropped the image without cutting off the top of their heads.  I could try to locate my code fixes; they are probably on the old box; I remember the company that I was working for so I probably have it in a directory under their name.  They shut down so I can't log in to fetch the code.

I have found over the years that Boonex won't listen to us unless you just bitch and bitch and bitch and bitch and they grow tired of you bitching.  When I pointed out the problem with the cropping it should have been fixed.  Instead I was told that nothing was wrong with it; and it was just easier for me to rewrite the code while calling Boonex some choice names.

OK, I should have looked at the attached imaged before I posted above but heck, I am going to leave it.

So you are fine with the way it crops for the thumb; you just want a full preview.  What version are you using?

Hi @Geek_Girl.

Yes, I'm only asking for the Submit preview to be WYSIWYG. That's the second image in my first post.

I agree that the Cropping feature of Dolphin has several carts before the horse, but that's something the Fork developers should consider.

For those members who may have never used the Photo Crop, it's really designed for people wishing to make a square Profile Photo from an elongated one. My second example attached, does indicate that the feature works adequately for landscape shots. It works equally well for Portrait shots too, but it's limited to square results.

During my research today, I discovered that the cropping feature is a watered-down version of Croppic which seems to have far more features.

Maybe it's something you could have a play with, or Deano could seriously consider using the more powerful version in his upgraded fork?

I'll prepare a flow chart later, but basically:

Uploading a Photo:

  1. Choose Album - no change (NC)
  2. Select Photo (NC)
  3. Crop screen appears - Member crops photo but has ability to do a square or rectangular crop.
  4. Member clicks the crop icon and photo is saved (NC)

This removes at least ten redundant and complicated steps needed in Dolphin off the shelf.

I only wish!

Hi @ JohnK42,

Just wondering if you have considered trying out AntonLV's, Photo editor mod?  I think that may solve your issue in case all else fails or is tricky.

 Regards.

@Aly, I have tried his mod. I was fortunate enough to do some work on another member's script with the module installed. There's nothing wrong with the mod, but it uses Pixlar, which throws up ads and offers far more features that I want on any site I own. All I want is a cropping tool. I don't want members to have the ability to add all sorts of weird stuff to their photos, but "Facebook-like" sites may find it useful.

Regards
