Now with 7.1.1 timeline got another bug... spam!

Ok, now a few problem was corrected for timeline with the new patch 7.1.1 but now another problem is appear that i dont have with 7.1.0.... the problem is that NOW new user UNCONFIRMED as show in the timeline... so thats mean ALL the fake spam account that try to promote viagra and enlarge dick pills are filling my timeline index page block....

99% of the fake account for spam doesnt activate their account via email... so with a wonderful mod that i buy on market the server auto delete unconfirmed account after 7 days if they dont activate it via email..

So the spam is praticly unseen for my real member until NOW with the 7.1.1 patch....

So boonex you should change the timeline function or add a timeline section in the module management panel... with some setting that admin can customize. Or simply make that every unconfirmed member should be an invisible member... because take in consideration that for now more than 90% of the account created on my website are from spammer. So how to keep my social network website CLEAN??

thx

I think you should focus on blocking the signups instead of tackling them after joining.

Oh but its a bug maybe!

so much to do....

Blocking the signup??? dude i want new real user on my website... and i partially block them with the ACTIVATION by email that is mandatory for create an account... i think that way its enough to help againts spam... i just dont want to see them in the timeline...

Do you have Auto-activate profiles after joining ticked in advanced settings/moderation ?

well for now i activate email confirmation so 99% of the fake account dont activate their account... and i buy a mod that auto delete unconfirmed account after 7 days... so this is a good beggining...

but the point of this topic is that now... even unconfirmed member are show in timeline... that the problem....

I  use to get 100's of spammers (humans and bots) a week right at the beginning (4 yrs or more ago)! ...

with the right prevention in place I am actually 'lucky' if I see one (human spammer) every few months and this is even with my site being very popular across the web ... I don't suffer with bot spam at all ...

I am sure 98% of your spam promoting enlarge dick pills etc (haha) will be bots!

what do you have in place currently to stop these spammers ?

Ok it is possible to have both ticked  :O) Sounds like a bug then

You Could make it so confirmed members are a different level than unconfirmed members you can then restrict it in membership levels/actions  if no fix is forth coming ..

yes i know but there is no action for membership level to remove them into the timeline... :(

Sh*t I made my original post go away clicking wrong thing ....

OK, well just some suggestions ... I don't personally make users confirm email and still don't really suffer with spammers anymore! I don't know if you are already doing any of this:-

1) have security question on Join form (bots don't really do questions!)

2) charge small fee to join even if it was $0.10 (spammers never pay)

3) blocking china helps many people stop spam!

4) block particular emails from joining (common spammer emails can be researched and blocked)

5) split join page (I know this helps many people)

6) research reported 'spammer' IP's and block them (there are sites / databases online with constant updated reports)

I meant to block the spammers joining the site, not the real user. HL gave the steps above ^^. Have you ever searched the forum before??

I would recommend the security question option for sure if you are looking to stop spam bots in tracks!!

i have the security question, even purchased a mod to make members confirm emails and all those bells and whistles. and I then found out that it is not bots doing the spamming accounts anymore. there are real people sitting at computers all day who just create spam accounts anywhere they can.

After setting up all these security features to stop spammers on a fresh site - still ended up with over 700 spam members in one night. And these are members who ARE verifying their account through their emails.

@totallyfreak. basically, what you are looking for is some script that checks the Profiles table in the database and if a user does not exist exist anymore, then remove all references to and from that user from your timeline. Is that what you are looking for?

Cause technically, this could be used iuf someone created an account on your site by mistake, or decided they did not want to really be a member for any reason.

This is new problem but perhaps it has always been there - I think that I would have noticed.

Someone has applied to join my site, not confirmed their email address, then proceeded to post photos. Is this a featrure of 7.11 or have I set up the moderation incorrectly:

  • Auto-activate profiles after joining:    TICKED
Preserve profile status after profile info editing: TICKED
Auto-confirm profile without confirmation email: EMPTY
Enable notification about new members:    TICKED
    Enable albums auto-approval:    TICKED

Thanks in advance

Rob

Scratch the last query. I figured out that new application only updated their avatar. Is there any way of preventing unconfirmed members from adding avatars?

Actually, usually photos from unconfirmed members aren't showing, it was a bug (see the ticket above) when uploaded avatars were shown in timeline/outline.

Speaking of TimeLine, I have one 7.0 site and one 7.1 site. When I upgraded my 7.0 site to a 7.1 site I don't have my post to timeline nor timeline. I asked my Hosting provider and he has no idea. Where did it go and how do I get it back?

If you set your site to approve members first then you have the time to set members to extended and boy do I have some weirdo's trying to get in but they cannot because their not approved. Everyone who wants to join can only see the main page and nothing else which took days to set that up.

Anyhow can someone please tell me how to get my Timeline back? Its on the 7.1 site, it came with it.

Thanks

Oh and I did a reverse e-mail check on a few of these e-mails that spammers are using and they all bounce off the same ATT tower. Has anyone else checked??
