What are your actions concerning the new data protection rules from May 2018? What about the social sharing plugins? Do you use them?

Are these EU rules?  I would hate to be in a country that is part of the EU with their chokes on free speech.  Of course we are seeing it in Canada and Australia and the Netherlands....  The USA may be the only place with free speech in the end.

Geeks, making the world a better place

I think Australia has backed off a little on this one, but not freedom of speech which our government says we still have, provided it's not discriminatory against anyone or anything ;-) . An official Aussie Government page on the web suggests you only need to comply if your organisation has a presence in the EU, but then it goes on to say something like "if you attract EU clients (members)". As my sites are strictly AUS only, I'm not overly concerned at this stage, but I would be delving more if I allowed international members to join.

GDPR is relevant to all countries even outside of the EU if they sell to or hold data on any EU citizen or company.

The law updates 1990s regulations on Data Protection and protects EU citizens with a single set of rules EU wide. Companies that suffer major data breaches will be held accountable like never before with the Information Commissioner able to fine companies up to 20 million EURO or 4% of there turnover!

The USA may be the only place with free speech in the end.

Not if the Democrat / Liberal / Progressive / Socialist / Left Wing Nut Jobs ever get back in power.

The Main Stream Media and the Left are actively working to stifle Free Speech in this Country.

This is also a problem I'm having also with members. I wanted to find out how to edit the bottom menu pages. I had a member point out to me that the data collection link on the bottom pages says I collect

  • Tracks visitor numbers (eg, Google Analytics)
  • Collects any personal data (eg, email addresses for a newsletter)
  • Shows advertising (eg, Google AdSense)
  • Takes online payments (Like PayPal or credit cards)
  • Uses cookies
  • Has user accounts
  • Names & addresses
  • Email addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • IP address (eg, via hosting logs)
  • Geo location data

I do know some of the information is collected but have never heard of collecting phone numbers or addresses.
