This a bit easy but...I am planning in the next month or two to transfer my site to a new domain name for increased exposure and other things. Will this new license structure allow a transfer to the new domain name or will I be forced to pay for the annual fee?
I was going to ask anyway before the new pricing was released, but figured this was as good of a time as any.

i think you will have to do as what was done in the past, get in touch with Lyubov and let her know the new domain, she will reset the license in the database, and you should be good to go.

Caltrade, isn't cheaper? Before it was $999 now it's $790 no? Are you refering to the contributor pricing? That I agree with.. |
As I understand it, you could get a lifetime license for Dolphin only for $100 - not including all those Ray widgets, some of which were pretty lame- now that price will get you about 50 days of use of your own application. That $998 price was for 5 licenses and professional instations - that price has almost tripled to $2,900. or you can pay Boonex $290 every 400 days - it is a really weird scheme. We were promised that the new version would be "more affordable" than the old system. They broke many promises about the time and schedule but I (maybe foolishly) expected them to keep that one. I am still trying to understand this, but from what I know so far, I am extremely disappointed.

Wow, thats right, for $100 a year you would get the licenses, I was going to do that, but now it seems it's for 50 days..I wonder if they are going to change it for dolphin 7....That really sucks.. |
Yep it has definitely been re-priced VERY high. |
Hello there...as I understood it...if you had ANY licence, then you will get unlimited licence. If yo had licence for dolphin, but not ray...still you will get unlimited licence for new vertion, which doesnt separate ray and dolphin...so if you ever paid 39.95 or whatever it was before...that you are good for new unlimited licence...not for one of 50 days or so.

yes correct, but for those ppl like me that was building the site and was going to go ad-free shortly, it doen't benifit me or others at all. I guess the only way around this is very simple....Use Dolphin with ads and when you have enough members buy the license, or pay$90 for 50 days which is ruffly $54.00 a month instead of $20 for being a contributor and getting the ads-free license. So the price tripled bascilly. Dolphin needs to understand that they are not the only community software out there. I've seen other great ones with just about the same features as Dolphin.

Yes i think i read that somewhere, I seem to have got the impression that the big increases would realy effect new licence buyers and not those who already have them. ( I think they call that loyalty rewarded) if ive understood it correctly anyway

Hi micky, i do see your point, i run under a free (with ads) licence and im happy doing that, but if ever i wanted to go ad free now, well, i really couldnt afford it (works out about one and half thousand pounds) Whoof!!! I have to dispute though that there is anything out there that touches dolphin for what it offers, believe me i looked and they always seem cheap and tacky by the side of dolphin. (depends of course what you want it for i think though) but for a community software, dolphin is way out in front (in classy feel anyway)
IMHO of course

Hey Tyke, yes dolphin is great, I won't mention names but I did find softwares out there which had the same as dolphin except the chat, but you could intergrate that seperatly. If I wanted too, I can also build a site free with Joomla, but the advantage of dolphin over those two methods is that the script is all intergrated therefore it's easier then with Joomla where you would have to install all the components toghter. I chose Dolphin over the other software because of the features and ease that it has, but on the other hand, there is still many, many bugs with the software, anyhow, I don't want to rant on Dolphin, it's still the better software. |

This is a HUGE jump. Not saying it's not a great program with a lot of stuff, but when you're looking at one price then it's tripled without much fanfare. It hurts the pocket in regards to planning the site and your business.

Well, upgraded fine but now have the ad back on the bottom. ARGH! Now I have to close my site while I roll back because I DON'T Want anyone to compete with me locally on this, if they see it, they will download and do it themselves. C'mon my license is no longer valid it would appear? Even though it was supposed to be unlimited??? |
In my opinion they really blew it. The $100 lifetime license was perfect - free and low cost helped to build the community, and would have grown it even more. Unless they change this, I don't think Dolphin will be "the next big thing" as they claim - this will be just another commercial package - actually not even one of the low cost ones.

Interestingly enough, I rolled back to a SQL backup that I have before I went through the trouble of upgrading. I did the upgrade one more time after restoring SQL and overwriting the files. Followed the readme.txt to the last character and now get a database upgrade failure:
Error in adding language key
The site still says 6.1.4 now. Very wierd. I am going to wait to see if it decides to reimplant that powered by footer in the bottom again.
|
So are you off-line now Medfordlite? i.e. Did installing the new version take you down? |
It didn't take me offline, just made some ads appear which prompted me to kill the database and redo it.
The upgrade did unlock the Ray stuff to not show ads in them as part of the license issue.
One thing for sure though is I will be doing some serious thought though when it comes to purchasing a new domain and hosting in the next couple of weeks to launch/merge my current site into the new iteration.

CALTRADE, you are wrong,
Don`t forget, that early - SP mean 3 free installs, not 5, all these installs was for 1 domain, not 5 as you told.
At current time 1 new SP package = 5 old SP package. So price was decreased at 40%.
Now no difference between SP and Ordinary dolphin. This is same package. All features included.
Only pricing was decreased (licensing policy).
So, as before SP had price in 998, now it just 790. So you can save $200 :)

Andrey,
I have nothing against your SmartPro license or pricing - whether that is for one domain or for five. That was a price you charged for installs and extra support. I'm sure big companies and corporations will still go for that $2,900 fee, and I hope you sell tons of them. The rest of us- mostly small business and professionals, had the option for $100 for a lifetime license (no installs) for a single domain. This option was apparently eliminated and the new price is $790 - an almost 800 percent price increase!
-
I think this new pricing is a disaster - for many of your members here, but also for Boonex and the future of this program. I actually liked the old pricing - $100 for the basic social network, and $100 each for the ray applications "a la carte". Many of us didn't like the ray stuff anyway - or could never get it to work. Why don't you go back to the original pricing for individual domains and have Smartpro be your "special deal"? In fact, why don't you strip Orca out of there also and provide an official and supported way to connect to third party bulletin boards?
-
I hope this changes, because the way this stands, you have taken a great deal and with this decision turned in into a deal that is mediorcre at best.

from reading the above it would appear that as my Dolphin Licence expires in October 2009 I get an unlimited Dolphin licence now? Is this unlimited licence restricted to 6.1.5 or would it apply to Dolphin 7 too and / or any future upgrades? |

From what In understanding it is good for the Dolphin 7 as well. Any official Boonex folks wish to comment on this?
