Need more mobility in Mobile Apps

I have an Android phone and my wife has an iPhone and since I havent been able to spend as much time on my site due to work as I normally do, I decided to start playing with the OO app instead. During my playing around, I found several issues with both the iPhone and Android apps.

Cant Do:

- You cannot 'join' the site from the mobile apps

- With Android app, you cannot add more than one site. iPhone app WILL let you add more sites.

- You cannot create albums (photos, videos, sounds)

- Since you cannot create albums, you cannot upload anything. This means you have to create the albums at the website before using the mobile apps.

- You cannot upload videos or music at all

- You cannot browse all members. You only have the ability to search. So unless you know the screen name of a person, you cannot 'add new friends'.

These items mentioned above are just some extremely needed abilities for the mobile apps. I also feel that you should have the ability to add any of the default boonex modules (forums, blogs, etc.)  as part of the mobile pages. I do not have $500 to spit out right now on a Prime license, so as far as branding.. thats another issue totally.

Any ideas as to when these features listed above will be added? With the world pretty much moving to 'mobile', you need to have the same abilities as you would if you were on a computer at the website.

finally some talk about the defunct mobile apps..

BTW, I did check TRAC to see if there were any 'fixes' to these issues listed below, but had no luck.

We are working on a new module for the Boonex Mobile Apps.

We are ready to publish this module but some bugs and limitations of this Apps have delayed the release. These the problems we have found:

1. for android, there is an error on the profile page that was solved, thank to AlexT: here the post: http://www.boonex.com/forums/topic/Http-status-code-500-200.htm and here the solution: http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/changeset/15486
2. the bubble for the new posts in the wall displays the new information number from your last navigation. If, for example, you have 2 news since your last navigation, you can see correctly in the bubble the value "2". The problem is that, this information is the calculated using the field "DateLastNav" of the table Profiles. This field is updated with the date of your last navigation when you access to the site via www, but it's not updated when you access via mobile. I've asked informations about this issue to AlexT and he explained that "this info is not updated because mobile site has no messenger. If this info is updated - users are seen as online, but can't be contacted via messenger - it will make confusion". Yes I've understood the issue. So no solution from boonex about this problem but I've an idea: it's possible to add to the "Profiles" table a new field, called for example toa (type of access), with values 0 for an access via www and 1 for mobile (it's only an example) and so if you access via mobile, all the application can't see you online thanks a control of this field. It's only an idea.
3. in iPhone, there is a problem with the click on icon. AlexT received this request and this is the ticket: http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/ticket/2662 . So, for now, the solution was delayed to the future version of Dolphin, 7.0.8.

I hope that Boonex decides to open other features to the 3d party applications as album creation, videos upload (just for youtube? it's better that nothing), ecc.

So, many customers contact us each day to get news about the release of the mobile wall but we must waiting the resolution of one or more of these request.

What do you think about?

When adding 3rd party application to an existing application (such as the Boonex iPhone and Android apps), you can only go as far as the 'core ' product will allow you.

So for example, You cannot create albums, upload music, or upload videos using BoonEx default mobile apps. Since the mobile wall utilizes the same 'upload' features as the core app, it is completely understandable that your mobile wall will not allow uploading of videos or music either.

So, For you mobile wall, If you feel that it is ready for release, then do it.. I know alot of people are waiting for that mobile spywall (including myself).

For people who want to buy it, they will have to understand that your modile wall app will not be able to do some things because the CORE (Boonex mobile app) is not capable of doing those things yet. Once the core mobile app is updated, THEN you can update the mobile wall to accommodate the new changes.

1) we will try implement join functionality in the future.

2) it is possible, there is menu button in android which is absent in iPhone, press it in sites' list view.

3) we will try to implement it in the future

4) you can upload to existing albums, if there is no albums - default one is automatically created.

5) we will functionality to upload videos in the future

6) you can browse members by using search by location, keyword or just view nearest profiles; for example you can view all members in particular country.

I can suggest you another solution. Add your own option, for example - mylat (my last access time), and update this field each time user visits your module. Then display notification number based on this number. So it should work everywhere.  

Thanks for the reply AlexT. I was able to find how to add a site with my Droid phone. I have to actually hit a button on the phone instead of touching something on the screen.

Hopefully some of these features can get added soon, like Joining and creating albums.

it's a solution.... but this helps to solve the problem only for our module.

My suggestion was to solve this type of issue in general. I understand that each request can't be accepted (you are very busy, I think, by many activities (dolphin 7.0.8 and dolphin 8 dev, the support, ecc)), but I's only an idea and I'm glad to exchange opinions with you and the other main programmers of Boonex.

This is temporary solution anyway, more general solution is to add messenger functionality to the Mobile App and update LastNavTime in mobile app as we do it on the site.

We will try to add it in the nearest future as mobile part of Simple Messenger module.  

ilbellodelweb     I feel like I am waiting on the first Iphone when I am waiting for the release of your mobile mod.  I agree with Zarcon realease what you have and the updates will catch it up...................

Release it as soon as you can it will bring a great deal to the table for all of us................... 

Ok...GOOD NEWS!

AlexT announced that all the files needed to fix the bugs about the mobile issues  were completed.

Now, from the next week, we'll release the module IBDW Mobile Wall.

AlexT says that, after the release of d7.0.8, the next step will be the new version 1.5 for the Boonex Mobile Apps (this will fix the icon problem for the 3d party extensions and also will add the compatibility for iOS5)

So now that D 7.0.8 has been released, can we expect the mobile apps to be updated soon? I would like to see some of the requests I made in the original post available like:

- Ability to join using the mobile app

- Ability to create new albums

- Ability to upload multiple photos

- Ability to upload videos

just to name a few.

Yes, v.1.5 of Mobile Apps is on the way. But it has only bug fixing and some improvements in supporting 3rd-party apps. The features you mentioned will be added in future versions or as 3rd-party integrations.

What I don't understand is why the Facebook connect feature is not used for the mobile app...

If that was done you just opened the door to almost a billion "REAL" people having the ability to join your site with just a few clicks for goodness sakes TatsFinder will you please design a mod that will do this? I would buy that NOW today and I am sure others would as well...

I can't think of a quicker way a person could become a member of my site that has to go through the Facebook programming of being scrubbed as a real person and not a duplicate spammer from CHINA.  IMHO this would help the programmers do so much more with the mobile app as EASE OF USE would be realized...
