Meta Tags again

In Dolphin

Settings - Meta Tags - Settings

There is two fields (Insert Meta description on site pages & Insert Meta keywords on site pages (comma-separated list)).

What is the general purpose to have two such options?

Description is what will show up when doing a search such as google, yahoo, etc.

Example...google...

search social networking result:

Mysite.com "My social networking site is the best around. Join the hottest thing going"

The part in the quotes "" is the description you would see in google or other.

The keywords are social, networking, ..., .... etc.

So when someone types social networking or whatever they see the title, and then the description.

Basically The title and description is what they will see in google, based on your keywords separated by commas. Keywords are often times the key so to speak.

the only problem with that is search engines tend to not like duplicate descriptions/keywords on different pages. they prefer you to have descriptions/keywords that are relevant to the content of the page they are on...

so, a forum topic that is about the latest movie, for example, wouldn't really have anything to do with what the meta description of your site/keywords say and could actually be penalised/hampered in search results for that.

having said that, a meta description and relevant keywords are a must have if you want your frontpage to rank well in search engines.

catch 22, I suppose?
