Join Form and Membership

I was wondering is there a way to add membership choice in the join form so for example -

if they select free, it takes them to usual completion page

when they choose paid membership - it takes them to payment page

also;

is there anyway to remove the default memberships as they dont seem deletable.

and finally:

is it possible and if it is - how can i create custom things for paid membership, e.g: pages, extra menus etc to paid only.

To my knowledge, it was never resolved for 6.1.  I'd be happy to be proven wrong about this.
