It's pretty cool what you can do with a drop down menu

The attached screen shot says all.

No.... not for the market.   I just got tired of menus dropping dropping off the bottom of the screen, and decided to make two column drop downs.  While I was at it, I wanted to see what I could do with a full width drop down, and jazz it up a bit with some menu related content.... mainly content that will explain what each section is all about. I thought the drop menu itself, would be a good place to explain the often complex menu list. Just about anything you can put in an html or php file, can be added to the scrolling div.

The way I'm doing this, modifies an existing template, adds some css to that template, and adds a few dozen language keys.  If I was in the template business, I might consider a market product... besides, I have no interest in selling things in the market.  I really don't want all the headaches that go with that.

If I can streamline the template change process enough, I may place a modified uni template in this forum.  Unfortunately, I expect everything to break under 7.1, and I'll have to rework everything.

This is one of them projects where I wish I had a better language key manager in Dolphins back end.  The html content in the scrolling div, was added via a language key that is unique for each top menu drop down.  I think I might load that content from an external html file or php file though.... it'll be easier to manage than a bunch of language keys.

Is there a URL we can look at to see it in action?

I can do better than that... here's a modified UNI template for you to try.  (?skin=uniFW)

Once you switch to uniFW you'll have the full width drop downs.   You'll have to add language keys for each drop down menu... you'll see the key names on the drop down.

EX:

Key:  _dropMenu_Blogs

String: <h3>Blogs</h3>Some text to talk about the blog section on your site.

Key: _dropMenu_Content_Blogs

String: Add some html formatted content to make things interesting. (images, flash, embedded videos, etc.)

One thing to note, is that you can't use icons for top menu list items.  The reason is, language keys are derived from top menu text, and if you use icons, no text is returned to the function that dynamically creates the unique language keys for each drop down.    If you want this to work properly, you'll have to delete the image names for the top menu items that use icons in admin > Builders > Navigation Menu.  I eventually hope to work this out, so you can use icons... this is still a  work in progress.
