IP Information / Multiple Spam Registrations

Hi,

I am having an issue with getting tons of spam registrations from multiple email addresses.  I know there is a ban option, but I can't seem to find exactly what it bans (ip, email, etc.);additionally, banning doesn't seem to do anything if I then want to delete the profile. I know there is also an option to manually ban IP addresses, but I cannot find a place where the IP of a profile is recorded.

Ultimately, what I'd like to be able to accomplish is this: when a spammer registers an account, I would like to be able to ban the user's email address and IP address from being able to register again, and then subsequently be able to delete the account so it no longer shows on my member list.  Ideally, I'd love the IP address to show in the admin panel in the Geeky setting on the member page.

Is this possible, or is there a module that can accomplish this? (I have tried searching and have been unable to find anything as of yet.)

Try this first http://www.boonex.com/forums/topic/New-wave-of-blog-spammers-15-to-20-a-day.htm and see if it cuts out some spammer bots.

If you try to start banning IP address and users your going to be a very busy webmaster.

We have several options for controlling spam sign ups..

Like newton said.

And besides. Banning by IP address is kinda pointless. What most people do not realize is IP addresses are dynamic for 99.9% of people throughout the world. Meaning you do not have that ip address for long. It eventually get's changed and someone else ends up with it. That is also the reason most DNS type spam databases are not very good or have a high rate of false positives. What was once a spammers ip address one week gets assigned to some innocent person a week later. IP addresses are unreliable as a spam prevention method.

For example i can change my IP address any time i want just by simply rebooting my DSL modem. And that will work for most people as well. IP addresses just cannot be used for spam prevention unless you choose to block an entire country or something else that extreme.

newton27, thanks for the information. I'm trying the first option and will see what effect that has.  Should it work, is there a way to adjust the "Join Now" button on the first page only to something like "Next Page" instead?

deano92964, thanks for your info as well.  I have had some success using IP bans with other membership based softwares before, and would still be curious to know if there's a way to make that info available either in the profile or the admin panel.  I'm also still curious about being able to ban by email (again, the ban feature doesn't seem to work if I also want to delete the profile from the site after).

This is a very simple fix that I posted several weeks ago. It took my site from 20+ spam registrations daily to 0. Simple, painless and free.

That would be a no on that, if you changed the wording for that its across the site.

in the languages settings, the language key for the button is  _Join now

you can experiment with that..

Tony, please make your post a "Blog" to. That way others can see it there as well.

There are many members that read the Blogs/Notes for help too.
