It is very interesting.  The reason that the speed of light is seen as a limiting factor is because as speed increases, so does mass.  The problem then is that one needs an ever increasing amount of energy as one approaches the speed of light.  Photons have a rest mass of zero.  This warp drive will not move the ship at all; it manipulates the space around the ship.  If they can get the energy requirements down to something that is manageable, then this warp drive will become a reality.

The Star Trek Enterprise was a ship that was built in space; never meant to land on a planet.  I see the same idea for future space craft designed to travel between the planets with a smaller craft to transport between the main ship and the planet.
