I've just lost about 900 members...

I've just lost about 900 members in the last hour or so, and I have no idea how.

Is it possible I've received an attack?

Is there a way I can recover this?

I've just discovered all my backups on my server have been deleted.

This feels like an attack.

Or could someone have used my details to delete stuff on my server?  Like when I pass on my details to someone who created a mod for help?

I don't know who you gave you details too, but certainly cant see where anyone would have anything to gain by deleting your members . Sounds more like your host had an issue and brought up an old backup. Are resent wall posts and comments missing too ? Do you only keep backups on your server?

In the past when this has happened it is normally because "database puning" was turned on in admin. It deletes old profiles if you have it set for a certain number of days.

Good call so again do you still have resent posts and comments?

In the future either way I suggest backups somewhere besides the same server.

Ahhh, I think that's it.

But what about the backups?

I've lost them too.

I've returned the value back to 0.  But I think the system is still deleting profiles.

Will this continue until they're all gone?

My backup is from the 30th Jan 2014, old, but not drastically too old.

I assume I use the restore feature in cPanel?

No, let me handle this for you.

I will check the backup I have for you as well.

The problem is going to be the content.  Not sure I can recover that.

If you think it is deleting profiles then disable the cron for now.  I will get into the server and take a look.

GG You could restore to a new data base so you can extract and insert the members Into his existing database

I have found a backup that is dated 30/Jan.  I am checking to see if it contains both the site files and the database.  Might be best to just restore the entire site/database to 30/Jan.  When the profiles were pruned; it also pruned content and that gets tricky.  I have made a backup of the current database; so if there were members that joined since the 30th, I could add them in and they would just have to re-up their content.

yeah  might be the best way to go...   start from the 30th..  and then change all passwords  just because.

The rule of thumb on backing up; how much can you stand to lose.  Reminds me that I need to do a backup tonight.
