I'm Having Issues With FILES...

I uploaded a file to my site, and it appears to be there, but we can't get the file to open.  We've tried with an iMac and an iPad, and neither will open.  The file is a .pdf.  Can someone please try to open and tell me if it works?

Hi. I go to your link, click it, take me to the attached image and that's it. Says "view file" page.

When I look at the ink using a web inspector, it looks like the extension was left off? That may be the issue.

"how-to-be-a-real-estate-investor-free", try ".....-free.pdf". Hopefully it gets you on your way.

That is the title, not the file.  under the title, it clearly shows that it's a .pdf file.  Maybe a need a good files mod.

Correct, but from there you can't see or open the file.  That's my issue.

Did you set your file permissions? And can you see your PDF on your server?

The image on the second page is .gif. There is no link to a .pdf that I can find.

@bonkered, I'm glad you brought this up. I hadn't gotten to the part of getting site ready and checked with my recent upgrade to 7.3.0.

My files are the same - no hyperlink for the file name and not able to download the file.

@TruckingSpace, checked my permissions and they are all good. Verified files are on server. Are those supposed to be binary files, though? That's how they are listed in my FTP client, regardless of file extension.

The link takes you to another page (Looks like Files/Album) It's not a link to a PDF file, The link's for an HTML file, or as someone suggested -  GIF

You will need to the site with an FTP client and make sure it has a PDF extension. If it does, it's the way you've added the file in the File Module. I don't use it but it should be easy enough to follow.

Tested in 7.2.1 with the same results.

@Demmy, in 7.2.1, as in 7.3.0, the files are showing as binary in my FTP client (screen shot attached).

That test file in the older version was uploaded the same way as the others were in 7.3.0 - using the uploader in the files mod.

So since one can't share, much less download the file as it is not hyperlinked, what exactly is the point of the files module?

I think it's a bug. Any chance one of you can report it?

For the record, I did the following:

  1. Installed the module and uploaded a PDF
  2. Then attempted to open it (left click on file name. - Blank page.
  3. Then attempted to download it (Right click) - File extension is HTM.
  4. looked at the file in  modules/boonex/files/data and the alphanumeric file name has no extension.
  5. Added .pdf and the file opened in the folder. Not on the site page.
  6. Added pdf to allowed extensions on settings -  No difference.
  7. Tried HTML5 and Regular uploaders. Same result

Conclusion: the uploader(s) or the script is truncating the file extension.

No such luck at my end. When I click Files in the menu I'm presented with this page. The only live link is the one shown and it takes me to a blank screen.

In other words, it would seem I'm getting what @Bonkered is getting. Mine is a completely new install on a WAMP server.

Demmy, when I clicked on a link under public files that took me to the view file page (the one that shows the file name, but isn't a link). On the right column is the Actions block and clicking on the download tab in that block (finally!) allowed the option to download.

Certainly is convoluted way of getting to the file, but it did work. Until I find out how to incorporate the download link in the view file block, I've moved the actions block to the top and added a full width column above that directing members to the download link in the actions block.

i had ended up purchasing the documents module because the default files sucks - this has been brought up a long time ago how the files are not downloading in the formats listed for download.

@sbg101, I haven't tried it on a live site because I don't want to use it. As the Professor points out, the default modules are not always worth the effort. Like him, I purchased Modzzz Advanced Groups because the Dolphin Groups is too confusing for the end user.

https://www.boonex.com/m/documents-for-dolphin-7-1 - at least with this document module - you get a preview of the document (with scribd) and the documents do download appropriately.

I looked at that mod however was warned from purchasing it by a couple developers as 1) its not been updated and 2) The module uses scripd API and they have announced that they are no longer offering new signups for API Keys. Read more at https://www.scribd.com/developers

do you know of any other way to have documents displayed in the same manner?

i bought the mod a long long time ago, and using it on a 7.1 site - still works fine for me. do not plan on doing an upgrade, so i guess i am alright.

It's not very clear on the site on how to download a file, so I'll make an FAQ explaining that, but this is what I figured out.

  1. Click on FILES (top menu).
  2. Click on the file you want.
  3. A new page will open.
  4. Look to the right for a menu area and click DOWNLOAD.

Thank you all for your input.

I'm doing the same thing.... something to think about is.... its highly likely that your site will be viewed from a cell phone so your instructions  " Look to the right for a menu area and click DOWNLOAD" won't be applicable for them.
