Home server just for laughs

Just to find out how poor my connection and old piece of junk spare computer i have is, i setup dolphin on a home XAMPP windows machine.

If you want to check out my test setup, here it is. http://dolphin.homenet.org

Tell me how slow it is.

Go ahead. You can laugh.

Who knows. Maybe it will surprize me.

Yours loads pretty fast here in Florida [edit] average of 7 seconds, you still have DSL? What's your up speed?

I have had duvallocals.info on a home server for almost three years now, just grabbed an Power Edge 2650, dual 3.2 Xeons, 12GB ram, and 5 73gb 15k rpm drives for $41.00 on ebay. Transferred the site to it two days ago and what a major difference! It's a huge noisy beast but it lives in it's own closet with my RMS server.

I run Dolphin on an old (but reliable!) P3 (450MHz) with 128MB RAM at home.  That machine also serves as a radio station and media server.

I guess, but remember I just started using Dolphin Jan 2010. Never setup servers b4 then.

The old server which is now the dedicated RMS server was the original b4 switch the other day.

  1. Connection 25MBdn/7MBup
  2. P4 2.8GHz HT
  3. 3GB Ram
  4. 120 GB 5k drive
  5. [edit]Modified home Battery UPS, added five car batteries in case of power outtage, the cable is always on so even in power is out for up to couple hours I can keep running.. LMAO
  6. Ubuntu 12.04 - setup each time using this great post. ( http://www.boonex.com/forums/?action=goto&my_flags=1#topic/D7-Ubuntu-9-10.htm) had to change a few thing that were updated since.
  7. and all the tweaks as per the speed up suggestions by AlexT

Well i am giving this a test run to see how poor it is. I am having serious money issues and have to cancel my hosting.

So i am seriously thinking of hosting at home until i pull myself out of this bottomless pit i am in.

You've got those puppies vented I trust? Heard a lot of home UPS stories gone bad due to lack of ventilation/hydrogen build up and dropped objects shorting out the terminals. Careful it's not your arm, it can generate a lot of amperage real quick like!

Deano - Sorry to hear of your financial troubles. You've helped me out quite a bit in the past, I'd be happy to set you up with a shared hosting account on my VPS if you are interested (runs dolphin 7 like a dream). Just shoot me a message!

I have all sorts of computing power at home, running a full virtual environment for lab work. My only downside is being stuck with 2.6mb down/256kbps as the fastest connection available here. VPS is the only  option I have to achieve enough bandwidth :(

All precautions taken, in a separate box outside with vents.

Line run in via attic and into closet.

@Deano, same for me here. I will give you an account on my VPS as well if needed.

I Wouldn't say its too bad after considering mine lol

top of that your connection is not meant to receive web hosting traffic and you might be breaking T&C of your isp. Get a better FIOS, It can work for you and cheaper than dedicated :)

so much to do....
